Crocheting is a great way for children to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and learn how to follow directions.
What is the ideal age to begin teaching a child?
Usually around the age of 7 or 8 is a perfect time. However if a child is younger and demonstrates an interest in crocheting, this is a good time to start.
Before you begin to teach a child to crochet, spend time researching for simple projects or use project suggestions below. Gather crochet tools: A fairly large size crochet hook, size G or larger; balls of colorful worsted weight yarn.
Teaching a child to crochet should be done in steps; one stitch at a time - chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, etc. Start with a simple project to teach for each crochet stitch. Imagine your child's feeling of accomplishment when they begin to crochet and immediately complete a project.
Boys like to crochet too. Suggested project would be hacky sacks, bookmarks, football placemats, dishcloths, etc.
