What is spool knitting?

For generations, people have been spool knitting. To spool knit, a spool with pegs around the top is used to produce a narrow knitted cord. Spool knitters usually have four or five pegs. Years ago people made their own spool knitters using an empty spool of thread and hammering nails around the top of the spool.

Spool knitting and loom knitting are a similar knitting technique. However, in loom knitting, the loom has many, many pegs.

What are the other names for spool knitting?

Spool knitting is also known as corking, Knitting Nancy, French knitter, and Bizzy Lizzy.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Finished on Tree

how to make christmas tree garland :

STEP 1: Yarn & Supplies

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - YarnGather the items you will need to make the spool knitted garland.  A list of the supplies is above.

Since I had a lot of leftover yarn from finished project, I decided to make rainbow-colored spool knitted tree garland.  But, you can make the garland in any color or it would be quite attractive if you used a variegated yarn.

Has your child been spool knitting?  Do they have a lot of spool knitted cord already knitted and they don't know what to do with it?  This is the perfect opportunity for them to use it on the Christmas tree.  How delighted they would be to hang it on the tree this year.

STEP 2: Casting On and Knitting

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - KnittingWe already have an excellent spool knitting tutorial. You can learn how to cast on and knit with a spool knitter by watching our video or reading our photo tutorial with step-by-step instructions.

Knitting Quick Tip:  To prevent a ball of yarn from rolling all over the place, put it in a bowl or some sort of container.

STEP 3: How to Change Colors or Add a New Ball of Yarn

Are you wondering how to change colors or add a new skein of yarn?  It is quite simple.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Knitting 2To change color or add a new ball of yarn, cut the yarn or stop knitting leaving a yarn tail of about 5 or 6 inches.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - New ColorPlace the new color or the new yarn and the precious yarn together. Aligning the two yarn tails evenly.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Knotted ColorsMake an overhand knot between two pegs – the last peg that was knitted and the peg that will be knitted next.  Tighten the knot between the two pegs.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Cord Ends Start to knit again.  As spool knitting make sure the two tails are in the middle of the cord.  Continue knitting completely around the spool knitter about 3 to 5 rounds. Then, carefully cut the tails shorter.

STEP 4: Knitting

With the tails in the middle, continue knitting until the spool knitted garland is the length desired.

Cast off the stitches from the spool knitter.  To see how to cast off, watch our tutorial.

STEP 5: Weave in Tails

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Insert YarnTo give the garland a finished look, the yarn tails have to be woven into the middle of the cord.  To do this, thread the tails at the beginning and end of the cord onto a yarn needle as shown in the above example.  Then, weave the yarn tail a few inches into the middle of the cord and snip with a scissor.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Cord End

The finished end should look like this.

After the two ends are woven inside the cord, the farmhouse Christmas tree garland is complete and ready to hang on the tree.

Spool Knitted Tree Garland - Tree Close upI love the way the garland and homemade ornaments give the tree a warm, homey farmhouse, country style.

In addition to hanging this garland on the Christmas tree, it can be used to string down the banister of the stairs,  drape along the mantle, or used as the cord for making  Christmas stocking or mitten garland.

I hope you enjoyed this garland Christmas tree tutorial.

Happy Holidays to All!
