If you are a beginning knitter, don't be discouraged!  There are several free entrelac knitting patterns on this page just for beginners.

What is the entrelac knitting stitch?

Entrelac knitting is an advanced knitting technique that creates a beautiful texture that resembles basket weaving.  It is worked on the diagonal and knitting directions are switched back and forth.

This technique leaves the knitter with fabric that genuinely looks like strips of woven knitting.

Entrelac knitting is a nearly forgotten Norwegian knitting technique that is officially considered an endangered handcraft.

Because it was such a traditional design element, once contemporary and modern patterns became in vogue, the technique and knowledge of it was at risk of dying out.

Is entrelac knitting difficult?

The only stitches that entrelac knitting requires are the knit and purl stitches, which are the basics of knitting.  However, it is also necessary to know how to “pick up stitches” which is something those new to knitting must learn.

This way of knitting might intimidate beginning crafters.  Entrelac knitting requires many steps, but each step is small and easy to learn.

Rectangles, as well as triangles, on two different orientations, gives the advanced and intricate look of basket woven strips.

This type of pattern can be worked in one or more colors, and the use of self-striping or variegated yarn makes beautiful fabric and is a simple way to add color without changing yarns.
