All About Loom Knitting

Congratulations!  Welcome to the world of loom knitting!  We have so many types of knitting on our Needlepointers.com website, and loom knitting is another way to knit without using needles!

Loom knitting is so easy, even the kiddos can do it.  But don’t let that fool you into thinking the finished project looks like a child made it!  Loom knitting creates beautiful knitted fabric!

What Is Loom Knitting?

Loom knitting is the craft technique of using a loom instead of needles to create beautiful knitted fabric, which can be made into beautiful home items, clothing, and cozy accessories. While using a loom might look intimidating, loom knitting is surprisingly easy when you know how!

When you are loom knitting you will be working yarn or other string materials onto the pegs of a loom. The knitting loom holds your work while you create a beautiful knitted fabric. You can use round looms, straight looms, sock looms, and flower looms, also known as the triangle loom!

There are various loom weaving stitches that are used to create a variety of textures to your finished fabric.  Don’t worry; loom knitting is not complicated, even with the many loom weaving stitches!

Loom knitting for beginners is something we focus on, so don’t be intimidated.  Browse this page to get started!  If you find that you like loom knitting, you should take a look at our spool knitting page!

Why Loom Knitting?

Loom knitting makes a nice, even knit fabric.  The fabric looks just as beautiful as that made with needles.

Another advantage of loom knitting is that those with tired fingers and wrists will find this type of knitting much more comfortable than knitting with needles!  Loom knitting is easy on the hands.

Loom knitting can be faster than knitting with needles, especially with double knitting.  You will be able to see your stitches much easier and be better able to keep track of your knitting.

Types of Knitting Looms

Like knitting needles, knitting looms come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and you choose the loom based on the item you are making.

Flower looms are difficult to find, but they are simple to make.  We have several tutorials here to show you how to make your own flower looms, which are also called triangle looms.

You will find that these flower looms can easily be made from plastic canvas or even something as simple as the lid to an ice cream carton!  Scroll down for more on the flower loom.

Circle looms are very popular and can easily be found in hobby or craft stores.  The smaller circle looms are great for making things like scarves, hats, slippers or other such projects.

If you want to make something larger, the circle looms come in a variety of sizes. Large gauge looms with large pegs make it easier to see your stitches, and they make knitting a lot faster.  This is a great place to start for loom knitting beginners.

Rake looms, also known as long looms or knitting boards, are perfect for making larger projects like sweaters, blankets or shawls.  Most of these looms are adjustable; you can add or move pegs according to the items you are making.

Sock looms are used to knit various sizes of socks or other small projects.

What Can You Make With A Knitting Loom?

There are so many exciting things to create with a knitting loom:

  • Hats
  • Socks
  • Scarves
  • Slippers
  • Blankets
  • Shawls
  • Cowls
  • Headbands
  • Flowers
  • T-shirt Rug
  • Purses
  • Caps and Slouchy hats
  • Much, much more!

Loom Knitting Stitches

There are many stitches that can be used with loom knitting.  We have great tutorials on most of the stitches you’ll be using.

When you begin your loom weaving, you’ll need to cast on the yarn to your loom.  You can use a cable cast-on or a crochet cast-on stitch.  They are very similar and simple to learn.

Another cast-on stitch is the cast-on drawstring.  It is used to cinch shut one end of your project like the top of a knitted hat or the toe of a pair of socks. Scroll down to find loom knitting cast on stitch tutorials!

On this page, you can find wonderful tutorials for many other loom weaving stitches such as the Celtic knot stitch, Andalusian stitch, diagonal stitch, farrow rib stitch, and so many, many more!

You can use these stitches in the projects that we have for you on our loom knitting projects page.

Scroll down to see what we have for you in the realm of loom knitting. It is more than you can imagine!
