T-Shirt Quilt - Deciding How to Quilt

T-Shirt Quilt Top

This video is about quilting the t-shirt quilt. Before you put together the quilt sandwich – the backing, batting and top. You need to decide if you are going to quilt it yourself or use a professional long-arm quilter.

If you are going to quilt it yourself, you have to decide how you are going to quilt it. Straight line quilting is the most basic option. This is the option I decided to use because the quilt will be very bulky and I will be using a home sewing machine.

WHAT I DID

As you can see, I laid the quilt on a large surface.

For straight line quilting, you can quilt horizontally and vertically or diagonally.

Since this quilt has different size blocks, I decided diagonal lines would look best.

Since it is recommended that quilting stitches should be at least every 3” over the entire quilt, I decided the lines on this quilt would be 3” apart. I then placed yardsticks on the quilt top where I thought I wanted the quilted diagonal lines to be. Repositioning the yardsticks again and again until I liked it.

T-Shirt Quilt Marking with Rulers

Next, I used a quilters chalk pencil to mark one diagonally line. You only have to mark one line or two lines if you are going to quilt diagonally in both directions. Your sewing machine guide can be used as a guide for stitching the other lines.

Another thing to consider is the color of thread to use. You should use machine quilting thread or a specialty thread. For this project, I decided on a gray color machine quilting thread.

Some people prefer to put the quilt sandwich (top, batting and backing) together, first, before marking the quilting line. For this t-shirt quilt project, only two long, sharp straight line were required, so I decided to mark it first. Marking the lines before or after quilt sandwiching is up to you.

OTHER QUILTING OPTIONS:

* Meandering or curvy lines, that do not cross, over the entire quilt

* Stitch-in-the ditch around t-shirt block and then quilting an x in the middle of the block

* Outlining the design in the quilt block
