What are the different styles of Deco Mesh Wreaths?
Deco mesh can be purchased inexpensively at the Dollar Tree to make a deco mesh wreath. There are many different methods of using this mesh. Four popular ways to use the mesh are below.
- Ruffle
Using 10 inch wide deco mesh, cut strips 20 inches long. Curl each end of the mesh roll inward a few times, then push the curled ends towards each other making a ruffle.
The ruffles are attached to twist ties already on the wreath.
- Poof
Using a zip tie, attach the mesh to the wire wreath form on the inner-most ring at a cross bar. Moving from one ring to the other on the wreath form, push the mesh into each section, making a poof about 3 inches. Twist the mesh, making three to four poofs in each section. Attach to pipe cleaners.
- Woodland Ruffle
Cut 10 inch deco mesh into 36 inch strips. Lay one strip vertically and curl a few times down from the top and clip in the middle. Turn the strip over and do the same for the bottom, curling up a few times. Squish together to make a ruffle and attached to pipe cleaners on the wreath form.
- Curl
Cut three pieces of mesh for each curl. Curl the mesh, pinch at the center, and twist on the wreath with the twist ties.
We will be using a variation of the curl method in our witch's hat wreath.
DIY Witch's Hat Mesh Wreath Tutorial
WHAT YOU NEED to make a DIY witch's hat wreath with Dollar Tree Supplies:
INSTRUCTIONS for making A Deco Mesh Halloween Wreath
STEP 1: attach the mesh to the top portion of the dollar tree witch's hat wreath
Unroll one of the black mesh rolls and fold the mesh in half lengthwise. I found it easier to unroll the mesh completely before starting in order to wrap the wreath.
Lay the hat over the top of the mesh that is folded in half, and place hot glue on the form to cover the width of the mesh.
Fold over the end portion onto the top of the hat.
step 2: wrap the black mesh on the witch's hat
Once the fabric mesh is attached, begin to wrap it around the DIY witch's hat. It is sometimes easier to roll the Dollar Tree hat form so as to keep the mesh folded in half.
Roll the mesh onto the hat, pulling the fabric mesh tightly and overlapping each layer to neatly cover the wreath.
When the first roll of black mesh is finished, hot glue the end of it to the mesh on the hat. This will be the back of the wreath.
Unroll the second black mesh fabric from the cardboard roll and fold it in half length-wise.
Attach the mesh to the hat by folding over a small piece of the end to make a clean start and use the hot glue to attach this to the portion of the wreath where the first roll of mesh ended.
Roll this piece of mesh around the hat as in step one, covering the remainder of the top of the hat.
When finished, glue the end of the fabric mesh to the mesh on the wreath. Cut off or glue any stray mesh on the back of the wreath.
STEP 3: cut the materials for the mesh bunches
Using a rotary cutter and mat or a pair of scissors, cut the ribbons 8 inches long.
Wide ribbon looks neat when it is dove tailed at both ends. Narrow ribbon can be simply cut on an angle.
Cut the three rolls of purple mesh 8 inches long. The mesh tends to roll back up, which makes it difficult to measure. Laying an object at the end will hold the mesh down so it can be measured and cut.
Using scissors, cut the green and the orange mesh tubing 10 inches long.
Cut the pipe cleaners in half. We used black because they would blend in well. However, orange, purple or silver pipe cleaners will also work to hold the mesh bunches together.
step 4: Arrange the four pieces for the wreath hat bunches
Begin by laying out the materials that have just been cut.
Each bunch is going to begin with two pieces of the purple mesh.
Use two pieces of the purple fabric mesh. Roll them up neatly in the direction they want to curl. Pinch each purple tube at the center and hold them in one hand, forming an X shape with the fabric mesh tubes.
Next, add a ribbon or tubing vertically across the purple fabric mesh X. Add a different material, ribbon or tubing, horizontally across the fabric mesh X.
step 5: join the materials together with a pipe cleaner
In one hand should be two purple fabric mesh curls in the shape of an X and a ribbon or mesh tubing in the horizontal and vertical position over the mesh X.
Taking a cut pipe cleaner, join the materials into a bunch. Do this by wrapping one end of the pipe cleaner above the horizontal ribbon or tubing and the other end of the pipe cleaner under the same horizontal material.
Pull the pipe cleaner tightly against the materials, squeezing the center to make a puffy bunch of mesh, ribbon and tubing.
Tightly twist the pipe cleaner several times to secure it around the bunch.
Repeat steps three and four until all of the purple fabric mesh rolls have been used. There may be ribbon or pipe cleaners left over.
step 6: attach the bunches to the dollar store witch's hat wreath
Take one of the bunches that have been made, and attach it to the corner of the witch's hat brim. Do this by placing one end of the pipe cleaner on either side of the wire frame and twisting the pipe cleaner tightly.
Once the bunch has been attached to the frame, push the pipe cleaners toward the frame so they don't scratch the door.
Repeat, covering the entire bottom of the witch's hat. As the bunches are attached, push them together at the end firmly so the brim will be nice and full.
As the bunches are added, be sure that the bunches with green tubing are evenly dispersed around the top and bottom wires of the hat frame to make a pleasing combination of colors on the witch's hat brim.
If, as in our example, the black mesh at the top of the witch's hat does not completely cover it to the brim, simply add one of the bunches just above the brim on the angled piece of the frame.
The bunches will spread out and fill in the portion of the witch's hat frame that was not covered by the black fabric mesh.
Your DIY Dollar Store witch's hat wreath is now complete!! Make the house festive by placing the fun and whimsical wreath on the front of the door.
