DIY string art is a craft that I started as a senior in high school. Every Christmas, my gifts consisted of arts and crafts kits and supplies, and one year I was given a string wall art kit that I loved.
This string art kit had a piece of wood covered with black velvet, and when it was completed, there was the image of a horse's head. The act of hammering in the nails and wrapping the golden floss around the nails was relaxing and satisfying.
What is best for string art?
There are many options that work well for DIY string art. Materials like embroidery floss, thread, thin yarn or crochet thread are often used for this craft.
The material chosen really depends on how thick the string artist wants the finished product to be.
The thickness of the material that is used determines how much of the background shows and how dense the figure is. Thin materials like thread will form a design that is well defined and has more contrast between the thread and the background.
What do I need to start string art?
Although string art kits are available at craft and hobby shops, DIY string art for adults is quite simple to create.
A piece of wood is needed for the back of the string wall art. This will be the background of the project, and nails will be pounded in with a hammer to match the outline design of the desired figure.
The string art design pattern will be securely adhered to the background with tape.
This page is full of patterns and designs that include holiday designs, objects in nature, letters of the alphabet, pets and much more.
Scissors will be necessary for cutting the chosen colored string, yarn or thread as well as for trimming the pattern to fit on the wooden background.
The DIY string art pattern or design is the most important part of the project. As you scroll down on this page, a wide range of patterns can be found. Some examples of string art patterns below include
