Don't know what to do with that stack of lovely Christmas cards at the end of the season? They are so pretty, and people spend a lot of time choosing one to send out that it's a shame to toss them after the holiday.
One fun and useful way to recycle gift cards is to make them into homemade gift tags to use on presents for Christmas gifts.
This project does not need to be limited to Christmas cards! Any greeting card with images that can be used later works well for this project.
The supplies needed for making gift tags are minimal. This is such a simple recycling project and saves money too!

WHAT YOU NEED to Create Homemade Gift Tags
- Old greeting cards
- Hole punch
- Pretty twine or ribbon
- Scissors or special craft scissors
INSTRUCTIONS to create homemade gift tags
STEP 1: Find pictures and designs on the recycled greeting cards
Most holiday cards and other greeting cards have images that work well for this project. Look for images that are about 3" to 4" in size.
Be sure there is no writing on the back of the image so the back is blank for writing your own holiday greeting. It is possible to find several pictures or images that work for these homemade gift tags on one card.
step 2: cut the image out of the recycled greeting card
Once an image has been chosen, carefully cut around it to make the gift tag.
Regular scissors can be used, although special craft scissors with designed edges add to the aesthetic of the gift tag.
step 3: Punch a Hole in the gift tag
In order to attach a string or ribbon to the homemade gift tag, a hole will need to be punched in it with a hole puncher. Be creative; some images can hang on an angle or sideways to add interest.
The hole does not always have to be on the top center of the DIY gift tag!
step 4: attach a ribbon or cord to the homemade gift tag
Find some festive ribbon or cording to use as a string to hold the gift tag to the present. Cut a length of the decorative cording, and fold it in half.
Put the folded part into the punched hole on the gift tag made from the recycled gift card.
Pull it through just enough to slip the two ends through the loop. Pull gently and the cord is attached to the gift tag.
The homemade gift tag is ready for whatever holiday or occasion it works best for.
No longer throw out those cards that are received for Christmas, birthdays, or any other occasion. Use this tutorial to create adorable gift tags for presents!
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make gift tags from recycled greeting cards. These gift cards will look so pretty on your holiday gifts!
