INSTRUCTIONS to make a homemade Christmas ornament
STEP 1: Decide what word will be made with the cubes
For this tutorial, the word "JOY" was used to demonstrate making this DIY Christmas ornament. This can also be made into a larger homemade Christmas decoration personalized with someone's name or a holiday or winter word.
The word "JOY" was made vertically; however, longer words and names can be made horizontally to sit atop a shelf or mantle.
Decide the word that will be made, and purchase that number of dry-erase foam cubes from the Dollar Tree teacher supply area.
step 2: Write the Letters on the Dollar Tree foam cubes
Since this tutorial used the word "JOY", the letter J was done first. Take the first letter of the word being made and write that in a capital letter. If the cubes are glued vertically, the letters will need to be written on four sides.
If the cubes are glued and displayed horizontally, the capital letters will only be written on the front of the cubes.
Use the green permanent marker to write the capital letters. To make the letters cheery and fun, dots can be drawn on the ends of each line of the letters. This also hides any imperfections in the handwriting.
step 3: glue the lettered blocks together
Once all of the blocks have been lettered, it is time to use the E6000 glue to adhere the blocks together. Use a small amount of glue between each letter to spell out the holiday word or name.
It is not recommended to use a hot glue gun as the foam will melt.
Be sure the Dollar Tree foam cubes are lined up neatly, either vertically or horizontally. Let the glue on the blocks dry.
step 4: attach jingle bells to the narrow ribbon
For this tutorial, a red, narrow ribbon was cut at 10" and 13" long. Attach a jingle bell to each end of both narrow ribbons.
If the word is to be displayed horizontally, the crafter may want to make a second set of ribbons and bells to be placed at the end of the word.
step 5: glue the jingle bell ribbons in place
For the vertical Christmas ornament, use the E6000 glue to attach the ribbons across the top of the word tower. To add interest, offset each ribbon so the bells fall at different levels on the Dollar Tree Christmas ornament.
Make sure not to cover the letters with the ribbons and bells. In order to see the letters, glue the ribbons crossing in an x shape at the top with the ribbons coming down the corners of the cubes.
If the word is to be displayed horizontally, feel free to place one set of ribbon bells on the first letter and one set on the last letter, being sure to offset the ribbons so the bells hang at different levels.
step 6: make a hanger for the DIY Christmas ornament
The tutorial uses a small word in a vertical position, so it will be made into an easy Christmas ornament. It will be necessary to have a hanger for the ornament.
Cut 10" of ribbon to be the hanger. Simply tie the ends together to make a circle. Using the E6000 glue, attach the hanger to the top center of the ornament.
This will not be necessary if the Dollar Tree craft will be a Christmas decoration as opposed to a DIY Dollar Tree Christmas ornament.
step 7: Make a bow and glue it to the top
Cut a piece of the 1" ribbon 24' long. Be sure the ends of the ribbon are cut on an angle or dove-tailed to make the bow more decorative.
Make a bow with a larger ribbon. If the ends of the ribbon are too long, simply cut them shorter at an angle
Once the ribbon is complete, glue it to the top of the ornament or at the first letter of the horizontal Dollar Tree Christmas decoration.
The holiday decoration or Christmas ornament is complete! Hang it on the tree or set it on a shelf to be displayed for the festive season.
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a Dollar Tree Christmas ornament or holiday decoration. Display this work with pride!
