Broomstick Lace
This crochet technique from the 1800s is also known as jiffy lace or peacock eye crochet. Broomstick lace crochet is made using a crochet hook and another long item, such as a broomstick.
Historically, a broomstick was used as the long tool, which is how this lace got its name. Now a plastic knitting needle or a wooden dowel is used along with the crochet hook.
A broomstick, as large as its circumference, would yield a lacier and open textile. The large knitting needle and dowel create a closely woven fabric.

Broomstick Lace Patterns
This technique can be used to make many things that might be made with traditional crochet. Below are many creative broomstick lace patterns to make beautiful lacy projects such as:
- Scarves
- Shawls
- Baby blankets
- Afghans
- Bracelets
- Tops
- Vests
My favorite pattern below is the broomstick lace crochet top. It is a very simple pattern, and the end result is a lacy top to layer over a cami or other top.
The designer chose to use two very large knitting needles taped together to make the “broomstick” portion of the set of tools. The other tool is the crochet hook.
Taping two large knitting needles together was an ingenious way to make a tool as large as a broomstick for this lacy piece.
The taped knitting needles make the top with a very open lace effect. It shows great creativity all around.
For those just starting with broomstick lace crochet, this is a simple pattern since all of the crochet stitches that are necessary to know are single crochet and half double crochet stitches.
If you know how to crochet, I see this as the perfect beginner broomstick lace crochet pattern.
This very well may be my next crochet project!
