When I was teaching, I found that no matter what the age or grade level, the kids loved to make snowflakes!
As soon as winter rolls around, it’s time to start those snowflake crafts.
SEASONAL SNOWFLAKE CRAFTS
The most wonderful thing about snowflake crafts is that they are seasonal; these great winter decorations and crafts that don’t relate to any specific religious holiday that takes place in the winter.
When I taught, there were no holiday parties allowed in school, but I made sure my classes had a winter party, and age-appropriate snowflake crafts always made their way into the agenda.
HOW TO MAKE A PAPER SNOWFLAKE
For most of us, when we hear “making snowflakes”, our first thought is the lacy paper snowflakes that all of us made in our childhood.
Yes, this page has many links for different types of the traditional paper snowflake patterns.
You will find easy snowflakes made from coffee filters for the tiny kiddos, as well as more complex paper snowflake patterns for the older kids who can cut thicker folded papers and trace intricate designs.
Be sure to look at the “Snowflakery'' link! Make a paper snowflake by simply printing the templates at the size you prefer, fold on the dotted lines, and then cut away the black areas.
These turn out just amazingly intricate paper snowflakes with only a few simple steps.
But there are so many other fun and creative ways to make beautiful snowflakes as well!
SNOWFLAKE CRAFTS
Our family has a tradition of making and exchanging holiday ornaments, and one year we made beaded snowflakes as the special ornament to give to the extended family.
Although ours were Christmas tree ornaments, these crystal snowflakes make wonderful decorations for your windows, catching that winter sunlight.
We used different shaped beads in pastels, white, and clear, strung them on pipe cleaners, and we had the most beautiful and stunning snowflake craft! Faceted beads make this a show stopper!
Tutorials for these and other beaded snowflake crafts can be found below.
Another beautiful snowflake craft to hang in the window to catch the sun is the stained glass snowflake. I saw these and knew we had to make them this year. Even my 15-year-old would love this!
They are definitely for the upper elementary age and above, but they don’t appear to be too difficult.
What crafter doesn’t have a hoard of craft/popsicle sticks on hand? Several of the snowflake crafts below use these sticks as the foundation for the snowflakes.
You can easily set up a snowflake crafting area by laying out glue, blue and white paints, sequins, feathers, those popsicle sticks, gems and shiny snowflake confetti. Let the kids get creative! They will love this.
DRAWING AND COLORING SNOWFLAKE CRAFTS
Drawing snowflakes appears to be a challenging activity, but not with the downloadable printable we have for you! It has only five steps; even the younger kids will find this an easy snowflake to make.
