What you need:
instructions for making a Valentine's Day Butterfly Pencil card
step 1: Download the free PDF Pattern
This tutorial includes a link to a pattern for the butterfly that will be used in this project. Scroll down to the link that is available below, and print out the pattern.
Cut out the butterfly pattern to be traced onto the foam sheets.
step 2: trace and cut the fun foam sheets
Using the butterfly pattern that has been cut out, trace the butterfly shape onto a sheet of fun foam. This can also be made with construction paper.
Be sure to use a pen or marker as a pencil line is difficult to see on the fun foam.
Once the butterfly has been neatly traced onto the fun foam, carefully cut along the lines to make this cute kids' Valentine project.
The pattern has two short lines in the middle of the butterfly design. This is where the pencil will go.
Fold the butterfly in half and make two small cuts on the fold line. Keep the cuts small so the pencil will not fall out.
step 3: write a greeting on the valentine card
On the back of the butterfly that has just been cut out, use a special pen made for writing on foam to write a Valentine greeting. This greeting could be something as simple as "Happy Valentine's Day" or "Be My Valentine".
The greeting looks nice written along the top curve of the butterfly's wing.
If a special pen for writing on foam is not available, it is possible to use a regular pen, but be careful as these can smear and smudge.
Don't forget to write the name of the person it is going to be given to as well as the person giving the Valentine.
step 4: decorate the front side of the butterfly
Using the sticky foam shapes, decorate the front side of the kids' Valentine craft.
Peel the backing off of the colored foam shapes, and apply them in any design that is preferred.
If the butterfly itself was made of construction paper, feel free to cut and paste construction paper shapes onto the front of the butterfly Valentine Card.
step 5: attach the pencil and pipe cleaner to the Valentines card
The Valentines Day pencil gift is going to be inserted into the two small cuts that were made in the middle of the butterfly. Push one end of the pencil down into the first cut and then push it back up into the second cut.
Slide the pencil down until the top of the pencil stops just above the butterfly wings.
Finally, the pipe cleaner will be used to make antennae for the butterfly. Fold the pipe cleaner in half and wrap the center of it several times around the top of the pencil.
Using a pen or pencil, curve the ends of the antennae into small circular shapes.
And there you have a unique and special greeting card to give to your Valentine!
