How to crochet the double crochet stitch.

The double crochet stitch is one of the most used crochet stitches. It is twice as tall as the single crochet and less compact.

Double Crochet Stitch
BEGINNING WITH A FOUNDATION CHAIN - ROW 1

STEP 1:
Yarn over the hook from back to front and insert the hook in 4th chain from the hook.

Step 2:
Bring yarn over the hook from back to front and pull the loop through the chain stitch (3 loops are on the hook).

STEP 3:
Yarn over the crochet hook and pull it through two loops (2 loops remaining on the hook).

STEP 4:
Yarn over and pull it through last 2 loops.

The double crochet stitch is complete.

ROW 2 AND ALL SUBSEQUENT ROWS

STEP 1:
Turning Chain - Chain 3, turn work.
At end of the row, chain 3. This is the turning chain and brings the yarn to the correct height for the next row. Some people prefer to turn the work first and then chain 3. This chain 3 counts as the first double crochet in the new row.

STEP 2:
Yarn over the crochet hook from back to front.

Insert the hook in 2nd stitch.

Bring yarn over the crochet hook from back to front and pull the loop through (3 loops are on the hook).

STEP 5:

Yarn over and pull though last two loops.
