MAKING THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET STITCHES IN THE FOUNDATION CHAIN
Refer to next section for pictorial instructions.
STEP 1: Bring the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front and insert hook in the center of the 3rd chain from the hook.
STEP 2: Yarn over the crochet hook and draw the loop through the chain (3 loops on hook).
STEP 3: Yarn over and draw through the 3 loops to complete the stitch.
STEP 4: Continue working half double crochets in each chains across the row.
STEP 5: After last half double crochet in the row, chain 2 and turn. This chain 2 brings the yarn to the correct height and counts as the first stitch in the next row.
HOW TO HALF DOUBLE CROCHET THE SECOND ROW AND ALL ROWS THEREAFTER
To begin the second row and all rows thereafter, you have chained two stitches at end of previous row and turned the work. The beginning of the row should look like this:
STEP 1: Yarn over
STEP 2: Insert the hook from front to back under the top two loops of the 1st stitch. A lot of tutorial call this the 2nd stitch. But when you look at the row it actually looks like the first stitch.
STEP 3: Yarn over
STEP 4: Draw the loop through the stitch. (3 loops on hook)
STEP 5: Yarn over and draw through the 3 loops to complete the stitch.
The finished stitch.
Repeat the above steps to make more half double crochets. At the end of the row making sure to make a half double crochet in the turning chain.
