I love our Fabric Snowflake tutorial and was looking for another project idea using the snowflakes. A friend suggested fabric stars and so now we have these fun patriotic fabric stars. So, pick out some fun patriotic fabric and make a fabric star garland to decorate for Memorial Day, Labor Day or the 4th of July. Watch our video or keep reading to find out how to make it.
If you are interested in some other ideas for patriotic craft projects, check out our Free Crocheted Patriotic Patterns page for some ideas. We also have a few other patriotic craft ideas at the end of this tutorial so keep reading.
I'd like to give a shout out and say "Thank You" to my friend Andrea who gave me the idea for this project. Thanks Andrea!

To make this project you will need:
- Patriotic Fabric cut into 5" squares
- Heat 'n Bond
- Ribbon
- Glue Gun and extra glue sticks
For my star garland, I selected this "Patriotic Picnic" charm pack which are 5" squares. It has a lot of fun and patriotic fabrics in it and the 5" size is perfect for this project.
If you would rather more uniform stars, then pick two contrasting fabrics to use. The look will be more like the fabric snowflakes. For this project, you can use as few or as many fabrics as you like.
In the video above, I give step-by-step instructions on how to make the stars. If you would prefer written photo tutorial, please go to our Fabric Snowflake Tutorial page. This page is a full photo tutorial on how to make these fabric stars/snowflakes. The assembly for the fabric stars and this fabric snowflake are the same. See a photo of the fabric snowflake below.
Below is a photo of our finished star. I made 4 stars from the patriotic fabrics charm pack. The stars are pretty with the Patriotic Picnic fabric. I mixed the fabrics up so they have more of a scrappy look.

Once you have the stars assembled, the next step is to put them onto a ribbon to hang as a garland. I cut a piece of ribbon around 70" long. This gives 15" between each star and about 10" on each end.
Cut a small slit in one of the star points on each star so that the ribbon can be inserted through the slit. Thread the ribbon through the slit and leave about 10" of ribbon. Tie the ribbon around the star so it will be held in place.
Thread the next star onto the ribbon. Measure about 15" between the stars and tie the 2nd star in place. Repeat for the 3rd and 4th stars.
Hang your garland on your mantle or other location in your house and your patriotic star garland is complete!
I love how my star garland looks hanging on my fireplace mantel. It would be a great decoration anywhere in your house.
