DIY Fat Quarter Pop Up Fabric Basket Tips

This DIY fat quarter pop up fabric basket is a fun, handy little container that pops!  I love my fat quarter pop up baskets.  They are handy to use for collecting thread and small fabric scraps while sewing.  They transport easily to classes or retreats too.  They can be used for so many things.

The pattern for this fat quarter pop up is by Fat Quarter Gypsy.  Because of this, we cannot show you how to make the entire pop up from start to finish.  We do give you tips on making this cute little basket!

What you need FOR the Fat quarter pop up FABRIC basket

• Fat Quarter Pop up Pattern - full-color instructions
• Small Pop up Refill (spring, a label & elastic.) 
• a fat quarter of non-directional fabric or 3/8 yard of directional fabric.
• light to medium weight fusible interfacing
• four large safety pins
• small scissors
• marking pencil

The fat quarter pop up has a spring inside which will pop up whenever the elastic is released.  It is a sturdy spring and will last a long time.

Below is the collapsed pop up with the elastic around it.  The elastic will hold the pop up closed until you are ready to use it.  This makes it nice to take with you to classes or retreats.

Remove the elastic and the container springs into shape. When finished using the basket, it collapses for easy storage by pressing the spring down and securing it in place with the elastic.

All you need to complete the project is one fat quarter of non-directional fabric or 3/8 yard if the fabric is directional, fusible light to medium weight interfacing, four large safety pins, a small scissor and marking pencil.

Choose a fun print fabric like the one above with the bicycles.  Or a pretty batik.   Any fat quarter of fabric will work and this can be made to fit any decor or style.

The finished size of the DIY fat quarter pop-up basket is 5 1/2" diameter by 6" high.

Tips for making the DIY Fat Quarter Pop up BASKET

• When you open the package, do NOT cut the tape on the wire!  I was tempted to do this, but wait until you are instructed to cut it by the pattern.
• Insert the wire with the tape offset from the four pins.  The tape must be cut after the safety pins are inserted so be sure you will be able to access it.
• Do not skip the safety pins.  Do not use straight pins instead of safety pins.  These could come out and cause the wire to pop before it is secured properly.
• Cut the tape carefully after inserting the safety pins.
• Zig Zag sewn edge of the bottom to finish the edge.  This edge will be exposed in the center of the basket so finishing will prevent fraying.
• Release the spring by removing the safety pins after turning the bag.
