WHAT YOU NEED to make a miniature rug
- Spool knit cord
- Needle or crochet hook
- Thread
- Scissors
- Large-eyed needle
INSTRUCTIONS for making a DIY dollhouse rug
STEP 1: neatly finish off the spool knitted cord
The spool knit cord should be the length that, when coiled, will make the desired rug size. The rug can be any size, just make sure there is the correct length of cord.
While spool knitting the cord, occasionally coil the cord to see if it's the correct size. If it's not the desired size, continue knitting until you have knitted the length necessary to make the rug the size you desire.
The spool knitting cord has yarn tails on each end. To give it a neat finish, thread the yarn at the end onto a large-eyed needle.
Run the needle and yarn back through the cord to hide the tail. Do this on both ends of the spool knit project.
step 2: Thread the sewing needle and begin sewing the spool knit project
Double thread the needle and make a knot at the end. This thread will be used to sew the cord into a coil.
For this demonstration, the rug will be made an oval shape.
To shape the rug into an oval, place the spool knitted cord on the table. Take the first three inches of cord and fold it back onto itself. This is the center of the rug and will start with the oval shape. The longer the first fold, the longer the oval will be.
If you would like to make a more circular rug, fold over less cord.
Use the needle and thread to sew the folded-over cord to the cord beside it, starting at the folded end. Poke the needle into the middle of one of the cords
and push the needle out through the other side.
Continue stitching back and forth, pushing the needle through both cords.
This stitching will hold the center length of the doll rug together.
step 3: continue stitching the spool knit project
Once the center length is secure, the next step is coiling the spool knitted cord.
Coil the cord around and sew it in place, taking a stitch into one cord and then a stitch into the side of the rug on the other cord next to it. Stitch back and forth until the rug is completely coiled and stitched together.
step 4: finish the DIY dollhouse rug
Keep stitching the coil until you're near the end of the cord. Gently tuck the very end of the cord under the bottom of the rug and stitch it in place.
Tie a knot at the end by catching a few stitches and making a loop with the thread.
Pull the needle through the loop to form the knot. Repeat the loop process one more time to secure the thread. Using the scissors, cut the thread close to the knot.
The DIY dollhouse rug is complete and ready to warm the floor in one of the rooms.
Does another room need a rug? If another room in your dollhouse needs a rug, follow these steps to make more in different colors and shapes, in either a circular rug or oval rug shape.
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a dollhouse rug from a spool-knitted cord.
