Making projects with T-shirt yarn is a popular craft. This type of yarn is different from other yarns in that it is made from about one-inch-wide cotton jersey fabric. T-shirt yarn can be purchased or easily made at home from old shirts.
This is a great way to recycle and make an environmentally friendly craft. If old T-shirts are not available, a good place to look is at a thrift store. They are very inexpensive there, and many different colors can be found. Add new life to an old shirt. It is amazing how much yarn is possible from a whole t-shirt.
When working with tshirt yarn, it is often necessary to join strips of the yarn together to make one continuous piece of yarn for the crochet project.
This tutorial will show how to join those pieces without taking the time and energy to sew the fabric strips together.
Once joined, T-shirt yarn can be used for knitting and for a crochet project!
If you want to sew the strips together, please see our tutorial.

WHAT YOU NEED to join T-shirt yarn strips without sewing
- Two strips of T-shirt yarn
- Scissors
INSTRUCTIONS to join t-shirt yarn without sewing
STEP 1: lay the two lengths of T-shirt yarn together
The first thing to do is to take the two pieces of T-shirt yarn and lay them on top of each other so the two ends to be joined are lined up. Make sure to open edges that may be curled.
STEP 2: Cut slits in the T-shirt yarn
At the end, where the two pieces of yarn are lined up, make a small fold.
Using the sharp pair of fabric scissors, cut a small straight line slit through both pieces of T-shirt yarn on the folded edge.
Unfold the yarn strips. There will be a small cut at one end of each piece of yarn.
step 3: pass the yarn through the cut openings
Butt together the ends of the two pieces of yarn with the small slit cut.
Next, lay the pieces of yarn on top of each other so the slits line up, making sure the yarn piece on the right is on top. Or if you are attaching a new strip to a ball of t-shirt yarn, the new strip is on top.
Take the tail of the piece of yarn on the right (or the new strip) and push it through both of the slits from behind.
Step 4: pull the ends
Take the two ends without the slits and tug firmly
until the two pieces of yarn have been joined together.
There should be just a tiny knot that will not be noticeable when knitting or crocheting with the yarn.
That's all there is to it! One continuous piece of yarn! This long piece of yarn can be rolled into balls of yarn. I hope you enjoyed learning how to join two pieces of T-shirt yarn.
