T-shirt yarn is a popular crafting material made of cotton jersey fabric that is about one inch wide. T-shirt yarn can be purchased, or you can easily make your own t-shirt yarn at home by repurposing old shirts, making it an environmentally friendly craft.
If you don't have any old T-shirts, you can find them at thrift stores for a low price. There are usually many different colors available, which can breathe new life into an old shirt. It is surprising how much yarn can be made from a single t-shirt.
When working with t-shirt yarn, you often need to join strips of the yarn together to create one continuous piece for making your projects. You can join the strips by sewing or using a non-sewing method. If you want to learn the non-sewing method, you can visit our page on T-shirt yarn without sewing.
For this tutorial, we will be demonstrating the sewing method. You can watch our video or continue reading this post with its photos and step-by-step instructions to learn more about joining T-shirt yarn fabric strips into one continuous piece using the sewing method.

WHAT YOU NEED to join t-shirt yarn by sewing
- Two strips of T-shirt yarn
- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Scissors
INSTRUCTIONS To join t-shirt yarn by sewing
STEP 1: Position the two pieces of t-shirt yarn
For this tutorial, a ball of yarn has already been wound and is waiting for a second strip of T-shirt yarn to be joined to it.
The first thing is to take the two ends of the t-shirt yarn to be joined together and overlap them.
The raw edges of the yarn tend to curl, so be sure the two pieces curl up together.
Step 2: begin sewing the strips together
Use the threaded sewing needle with a knot at the end to make stitches where the two pieces of T-shirt yarn overlap.
Start at the overlapped yarn and make several small stitches to join the yarn, going all the way through both pieces of yarn.
The stitching will be in a straight line down the center of the T-shirt yarn strips.
Step 3: knot and cut the thread
Using the needle and thread, make a loop by making one stitch in the fabric. Run the needle through the loop and pull to make a knot.
Do this twice to secure the knot.
Using the sharp pair of fabric scissors, cut the thread at the knot close to the T-shirt yarn.
The two strips of T-shirt yarn are now joined securely and can be wound onto the yarn ball. It is now ready to be made into fun projects!
I hope you enjoyed learning how to join two pieces of T-shirt yarn using the sewing method.
