WHAT YOU NEED to make this men's birthday card
INSTRUCTIONS to create a birthday card for a man
STEP 1: Draw the banner
Lay the front of the card on the work surface so it opens at the bottom.
Using a pencil, start 1/4 of the way in on the top from the left side of the card and draw a line with a slight downward curve to the right side of the card, 1/4 of the way down from the top.
Next, beginning where the first line ended, draw a swag line that curves down towards the left side of the card, ending 1/4 of the way up from the bottom.
STEP 2: draw the pennants on the swag lines
Each of the letters for "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" will go in its own pennant. Begin by writing the sentiment on a piece of scrap paper to find the center of each word.
Mark the center of each swag line.
The center of HAPPY is the first P. There will be five pennants on the top swag for the word HAPPY.
Begin by making a pennant at the center mark on the top swag with a pencil. Follow that center pennant with two more pennants towards the right.
Make two pennants in front of the center pennant. There should be five pennants on the top swag line for the word HAPPY.
Next, find the center of the second word, which is BIRTHDAY. The center of that word is between the T and the H.
Make a pennant on either side of the center of the bottom swag. Add three pennants before and after these with the pencil.
There should be eight pennants on the bottom swag for the word BIRTHDAY.
Step 3: outline with the permanent marker
Once the pennants and swags have been drawn, outline over the pencil marks with the fine-tip Sharpie permanent marker.Using a permanent marker will ensure that the watercolor markers do not bleed with a watercolor black outline.
Step 4: Erase the Pencil lines
Before coloring in the pennants, use the pink eraser to erase all the pencil lines from the front of the note card. After coloring with the markers, the pencil lines are difficult to remove.
Step 5: Color the inside of the pennants
Alternate these colors for the pennants using the two watercolor markers in gray and blue. Begin with gray and draw just inside of the permanent marker in black. Do this for every other pennant.Next, use the blue watercolor marker and draw a line just inside of the remaining pennants.
Step 6: Color the inside of the pennants with colored pencils
Using the blue and black colored pencils, color the pennants with a light touch. Be sure not to make these too dark, especially with the black pencil. It should look gray.
Step 7: Write the sentiment
Using the black watercolor marker, write each letter for HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the pennants. Use the fine-tip portion of the black watercolor marker. The fine tip black permanent marker could also be used but the letters will not show up as well.
Step 8: draw confetti
Using either the colored watercolor marker or colored pencil, draw swirls and dots as confetti around the pennants to add a decorative touch. The card is finished!
Other Ideas
This is a good design for several different greeting cards. You can experiment with different ways to color the pennants. The photo below shows another sample card with the "I Love You" saying.
This card design could be for special occasions with sentiments such as THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS.
