Sewing for babies might be one of the most enjoyable fabric projects. There is something so special when working on those tiny clothing items, blankets that you know the little one will snuggle up in, hooded towels that will keep that sweet pea warm after a bath…
There is no better way to celebrate the birth of a new baby than by sewing handmade gifts with love. Yes, there are practical items that all new parents will need like bottles and pacifiers, but your handmade baby sewing project will be the most special.
If you want to see some free patterns to knit for baby or baby crochet projects, check out our pages with wonderful ideas.
When I had my first baby, oh so many years ago, I remember receiving many handmade blankets. Every one of them was unique, and I could just feel the connection with the person who had been sewing the baby gift of a blanket.
I used each and every one of those many blankets in different ways.
For example, the large pink flannel blanket was perfect for laying on the floor under my daughter.
I would lay next to her and talk and cuddle, and as she grew, the blanket became her “home base”. Floor time was always on the pink blanket made by my aunt.
Beatrix Potter was the theme of the baby’s room, and my mom made a panel blanket showcasing Peter Rabbit. This was always in my daughter's crib with her.
When she wasn’t in the crib, it was simple to smooth the blanket out like making a bed. It was all neat and tidy for the next nap!
My sister had made a cute peach colored hooded towel. It was nice and large, and I was able to wrap my lovely girl up after a bath in that special sewing baby gift until she was well into her toddler years!
Blankets and towels are not the only baby sewing projects that we have gathered together on this page! There is a long list of things you can be sewing for babies to give as baby shower gifts, new mom gifts or to use with your own sweetie.
Some baby items to sewing here include:
