Knitted bookmarks are lovely to behold. They can be as simple or as complex as preferred, so both beginners and experienced knitters can enjoy making them. They are also a great project to use up yarn scraps!
This page is full of free knit bookmark patterns and tutorials. The variety below is amazing!
The lacey bookmarks remind me of bookmarks my grandmother had when I was young. She was an avid reader and had beautiful knit bookmarks to mark her place in her books.
She had a special old Bible that she read, and the Heart Crosses bookmarks would be perfect for use in a Bible. It is lovely, though a bit tricky. If you are an experienced knitter, this is one that may challenge you!
Materials Needed to Knit Bookmarks
- Yarn: A light to medium-weight yarn like cotton or acrylic works best for bookmarks. Bulky yarns should be avoided since they are too thick to be used between book pages.
- Knitting Needles: Smaller needles are great for tighter stitches, which will help the bookmark stay flat.
- Scissors: These are needed for trimming ends.
- Tapestry Needle: This needle is useful for weaving in yarn ends.
- Optional Decorations: Beads, tassels, or embroidery can be added for a personal touch.
Types of Stitches and Patterns Used
A wide range of stitches are found in the knitted bookmarks below. As a general rule, these are the stitches as they range in difficulty.
Beginner:
Garter stitch: This is the simplest stitch, creating a neat, slightly textured look. Every row is simply knitted with this basic stitch.
Stockinette stitch: Alternate between knitting and purling rows. This gives a smoother look but tends to curl at the edges. A border may be necessary for this.
Intermediate
Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches will create a stretchy, flexible bookmark.
Lace patterns: By using lightweight yarn and lace stitches, delicate and intricate designs can be made. Find many lacey patterns below.
Cables: Small cable patterns can add an elegant twist to a bookmark. Look for the cable knit pattern below.
Advanced
Colorwork: Stripes or other changes in colors make beautiful and interesting bookmarks. The pencil bookmark below has several color changes.
Custom motifs: There are several patterns with hearts that are knit into the designs.
Shaping: There are patterns below that advanced knitters would enjoy, where they can create bookmarks in shapes like hearts, frogs, bookworms, and a library mouse.
Patterns for crochet bookmarks can also be found on the site.
