What is the history of American football?
Believe it or not, in Ancient Greece, men played a sport very similar to American football called Episkyros. In this game, the goal was to throw a ball over a scrimmage while avoiding being tackled.
Forms of traditional football were played throughout Europe for ages. Many scholars classified this as mob football involving handling of the ball and scrimmage formations.
These mob games were played between villages and towns. An unlimited number of players on opposing teams would clash in a crushing mass of people who would do their best to drag an inflated pig’s bladder to markers at the end of each town.
(See why it's called a pig skin?)
Now, it is considered archaic, as in some such events, the ball could be moved towards the goal in any way possible, as long as it didn’t lead to murder. These games declined quickly in the 19th century when the Highway Act of 1835 was passed, which banned football playing on public highways.
Now, the game is much more organized, as are the football parties planned for family and friends to gather and watch.
