How to sew a lip balm holder
Skill Level: Beginners
Time: Less than a half-hour
what you will need for the DIY fabric lip balm holder:
- Scraps of quilting cotton
- Lightweight or featherweight fusible interfacing
- 3/8" Ribbon
- Keyring/Zipper Pull
- Standard sewing supplies
- Regular size lip balm
INSTRUCTIONS to make a lip balm holder
STEP1: CUTTING FABRIC & RIBBON
Start by cutting the fabric. You will need to cut two pieces of cotton fabric and one piece of interfacing 2" wide and 7" long.
Cut a piece of ribbon 3" long.
STEP 2: INTERFACE FUSING
Following the manufacturer’s instruction, iron the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the fabric strips.
STEP 3: RIBBON PLACEMENT
Fold the ribbon in half and center it on the short side of the fused fabric piece. Pin.
STEP 4: SEWING MAIN PIECE
Turn under 1/4 inch and iron the bottom edge of the two fabric pieces.
Place the two pieces of fabric with right sides together and pin around the whole thing.
Stitch along three sides of the lip balm holder using a ¼” seam allowance, leaving the bottom end unsewn. Sew up one long side, across the short side containing the ribbon and down the other long side.
Clip the corners and turn right side out. Push out corners and press flat.
Stitch bottom closed using a 1/8” seam.
STEP 5: CREATING POCKET FOR LIP BALM
Next, fold the bottom up 2 ½ inches toward the top and pin.
Edgestitch 1/8” from the edge around the perimeter of the entire lip balm holder. If you're not sure how to edgestitch, check out our tutorial.
STEP 6: FINISHING THE LIP BALM HOLDER
Now it is time to attach the keyring. Slip the keyring into the ribbon loop. All done! Super Easy! It's so easy that you should probably make multiples!!!
This lip balm cozy is the perfect gift to sew for neighbors, teachers, and friends or an accessory for yourself. Whip up as a quick stocking stuffer, have on hand for an instant gift, or create for a bazaar or craft show.
