Homemade picture frames make wonderful gifts for so many special occasions, and this crocheted rose frame is perfect for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and birthdays.
How do you make a picture frame interesting?
Purchased wood picture frames from a craft store can be decorated with all sorts of embellishments. Artists may use wooden shapes, beads, paper, buttons, ribbons or many other items to make the frame look interesting.
Even the kiddos can decorate picture frames, though if they don't yet crochet, the roses would need to be made for them for this frame.
The crochet roses are from a free pattern from Petals and Picots. It is a very simple pattern and the roses are easy enough for a beginner crocheter to make.

Instructions on how to make a wooden heart frame with crocheted roses
step 1: Paint the wooden heart frame
Be sure to cover the work area with newspaper, cardboard, or something else to protect it from paint.
If there is a plastic cover to be placed over the photo, be sure to remove that before painting the picture frame.
Lay the wooden craft heart frame on the protected workspace. Pour some of the acrylic paint onto the cardboard or a paper plate.
Using the sponge applicator, paint the top and sides of the frame with acrylic paint.
Let the paint dry. If it is necessary, apply a second coat of the paint. Let the paint dry thoroughly.
step 2: crochet the roses
Depending on the size of the frame, more or less roses may be needed to go around the heart opening. The crochet heart pattern from Petals and Picots can be used in any color yarn desired. For this tutorial, eight red roses were needed.
step 3: glue the roses to the heart picture frame
Using the hot glue gun, begin to glue the roses to the wooden heart frame. Begin by centering a rose at the bottom tip of the heart and the tip at the top of the heart.
Carefully glue these two roses in place. Next, fill in the spaces around the heart with the remaining roses that have been made.
The heart picture frame is nearly complete. Just add a special photo to the frame, and it is ready to give as a Valentine's Day gift, Mother's Day or birthday gift.
