This easy Garter Ridge Pillow is created by finger knitting with a free pattern from Yarnspirations. This pillow is easy to knit using loop yarn and fits around a 20" square pillow form.
Watch our video tutorial through the link below to learn about the stitches and process for making this pillow. This pillow pattern is stitched by alternating two loop yarn stitches, stocking stitch, and garter stitch.
This is a good first project with loop yarn because it uses the two main stitches and takes several hours to make. A complete beginner can make it!

What is Loop Yarn?
Loop yarn is a type of yarn that has preformed loops built into it. It's usually a chunky yarn and is more fuzzy or fluffy. It can be used for finger-knitting projects and is very easy to work with. Loop yarn is a great way to get kids interested in knitting and maybe progress to regular knitting projects.
Currently, there are three brands of loop yarn - Bernat Alize Blanket EZ yarn, Red Hearts Loop-It Yarn and Lion Brand Off The Hook Yarn. The yarn comes in many different colors, some of which are variegated. Links to purchase yarn are at the end of this article.

Making the Pillow
Using the new loopy yarn, this pillow was fun and easy for a kid to make.
This pattern uses two different stitches: stockinette stitch and garter stitch. Click the links for a full tutorial on stitching either stitch.
By alternating the stitches, it gives the pillow a ridged look.
Once the pillow has been stitched, it's finished by sewing the sides together and inserting the pillow form. The last side is then stitched closed.
Alternate finishing Style
Finish your pillow with loops around the edge if you want to add flair to your pillow.
To get this look, instead of cutting the thread at the base of the loops to make a smooth yarn, leave the loop yarn with the loops. Use the yarn with the loops to stitch the sides. As you stitch, pull the loops to the outside so they show around the edge of the pillow.
Also, consider using either side of the stitched fabric for your pillow. The two pillows in our photos are made with different sides of the stitched pillow fabric. The first one is flatter, and the second displays more ridges.
We hope you enjoyed learning about this Garter Ridge PIllow pattern and consider making one for yourself. Scroll down for links to the free pattern and to purchase the loop yarn.
