Free Crochet Motorway Blanket Pattern

Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!

Cars have been a popular plaything since the day they were invented.  Here's a fun and colorful car-themed blanket for kids that are into cars. Little kids will love snuggling up with this crochet kids blanket that will have them dreaming of a car adventure.

With this free pattern, crochet a blanket to set the tone for a marvelous car bedroom décor, fun car playtime mat, snuggly car blanket or homey touch for when your child is away from home.

The inspiration behind me making this blanket was my  2-year-old great-grandson's love for toy cars, vans, pretty much anything with wheels. 

While browsing online, I saw this free multi-vehicle pattern by Premier Yarns called Motorway Blanket.  I immediately thought of Elijah.  The crochet blanket would make a wonderful gift that would grow with him and be a neat keepsake.

The blanket's crochet techniques include stripes, colorwork and applique. The cute little car appliques were so quick, easy to make and would look adorable as an embellishment on other kids' crochet items.

DIY MOTORWAY BLANKET

The pattern consists of three roadways and nine appliqued cars.  You make it by crocheting a blanket piece, crocheting edgings around the blanket, and sewing on the car appliques.

What size will the blanket be?

Finished Blanket Measurement approx. 52" x 43"

WHAT YOU NEED for the motorway blanket:

• Soft  Worsted-weight Yarn
• Crochet Hook Size H-5 (5mm)
• Tapestry or Yarn Needle
• Scissors

YARN NEEDS?

The free crochet blanket pattern has a list of the yarn colors and the number of balls of yarn. 

The pattern called for Premier Ever Soft yarn.  My shop didn't carry Premier yarn so I need a yarn substitute.  According to the pattern, the yardage for a ball of the Premier yarn is 158 yards and Premier's website has the yarn listed as an acrylic #4 medium weight yarn.  That means it is a worsted weight yarn.

With this information, calculating the number of skeins of yarn needed from the chosen substitute yarn was easy. 

To my dismay and a waste of money, I shouldn't have purchased the skeins of yarn for the applique cars.  The pattern says to purchase three balls of yarn.  Only a small amount of yarn is necessary to make the applique cars.  Yarn from a yarn stash would have been adequate to crochet them.

WHAT STITCHES ARE USED for the crochet blanket?

• Chain
• Double Crochet
• Double Treble Crochet
• Half Double Crochet
• Single Crochet
• Slip Stitch

The blanket is crocheted with four sections of wave stitches using the chain, double crochet and half double crochet stitches.  When making these sections, pay close attention to the row order as crocheting.

You make want to use this technique for tracking the crochet rows.

The roadways are done using the wave stitch pattern and a single crochet stitch for the yellow line in the middle of the road.

The back loop only crochet technique is also throughout this pattern.

The final step on the blanket piece is four rows of single crochet edging.

After crocheting the blanket piece, it’s time to make and attach the car appliques.  

To my surprise, crocheting the car appliques was quick and easy.  Crocheting the bodies of the cars took about 10 minutes each. Nine car appliques. Then, 18 crochet car wheels.  The wheels were sewn onto the cars.  Once the applique cars were finished, it was time to attach them to the blanket piece.

When sewing the cars to the blanket, you don't want stitches to show on the back of the blanket.  A tutorial on how to sew a crochet applique to a crochet piece invisibly is here.

final step - the label

The final step is to attach a custom label to it.  Lots of crocheters neglect this step. Don't!!!!

An artist adds their name to their finished artwork; your handmade crochet creations are works of art and a personalized label should be added to all finished projects. Many crochet items will be heirlooms and the person who made them will always be known because of the label.
