Do you remember making doll clothes for your 12" dolls when you were a little girl? I do! Those were the clothes I liked to dress her in the most, and making them was my introduction to sewing.
There is no shortage of clothing for 12" dolls, but it can be expensive. This doll skirt is made from a fleece hat purchased from the Dollar Store, so it costs very little.
It is so easy and quick to whip up that a young sewer can easily make this skirt and have a fancy outfit for their special doll without much work or a doll skirt pattern.
This fashion doll skirt will fit 11.5-inch dolls like Barbie dolls, Aziam Kidz Yoga, Queens of Africa, Lammily, and One World Dolls. This project may also fit the 10.5-inch dolls like Monster High and Hasbro Disney Princess.

WHAT YOU NEED to make a 12" doll skirt with no pattern
- Dollar Store fleece winter hat with a tassel at the top
- Basic sewing supplies like a needle and thread
- Narrow 1/4" elastic (Optional)
- Scissors
INSTRUCTIONS for making a Fashion doll skirt
STEP 1: Remove the tassel
For the first step, use fabric scissors to cut just a little under the tassel on the top of the fleece hat. The hat will now be in two pieces.
The bottom portion is the skirt piece, and the doll can wear it as is. Just slip her into it, feet first, with the top edge of the skirt at the waist of your doll.
This skirt won't last long as the seams will come out unless a waist band is made. The directions are as follows.
Step 2: Make a neat waistband
To prevent the back seam and side seam from coming out, take the skirt portion of the hat and begin to work at the top, which is the waist of the skirt. The bottom edge of the skirt is the bottom of the hat.
Turn the skirt inside out, and make a narrow folded edge at the raw edge of the hat, about 1/4 of an inch, at the top, which is the waist of the skirt. Sew it with the needle and thread to make a waist seam.
Step 3: Add an elastic waistband to the 12" doll skirt
Place the elastic inside the skirt's waistband on the wrong side. A piece of elastic can be sewn on the waist to keep the skirt in place. Take the narrow elastic and take a waist measurement. Cut a piece that will fit around the doll's waist.
With the needle and thread, hand sew the elastic in place at the inside fold of the waistband that was made in Step 2.
Step 4: Add decoration to the skirt
The scrap fabric of the tassel end of the original fleece hat can be sewn as extra fabric off the top of the skirt to add flair and decoration to the outside of the skirt. Hand-sew the tassel onto the waist of the skirt. Don't be afraid to use a seam ripper if the stitches are not how you like.
This will make the skirt look dressy.
