WHAT YOU NEED to Make a Cat Toy with catnip
![Catnip Toy 1 Supplies]()
what fabric should you use for the catnip toy?
Fabric remnants such as 100% Cotton, upholstery fabric, wool, felt, fleece and knit (like t-shirt fabric) are excellent choices for making cat toys. However, it's important to choose fabrics that do not have any finishing treatment. Water-repellent or stain-resistant finishes can hide the scent of the catnip, which is essential for attracting cats.
My cat tends to destroy homemade toys made with felt or fleece; therefore, I prefer using cotton and upholstery fabrics since they are stronger and more durable.
can I make this cat toy if I don't have a sewing machine?
Yes, you can make this catnip toy without a sewing machine. However, it will take you longer than 5 minutes to complete! You can use the basic backstitch sewing method to sew the seams.

STEP 1: gather the fabric
This project is ideal for using up small scraps of fabric. It’s a great scrap-buster!
STEP 2: cut the fabric
Place the chosen fabric on your cutting mat and with your rotary cutter and ruler, measure and cut two 3 ½” squares of fabric.
![Catnip Toy 2 Cut Fabrics]()
NOTE: If you don’t have a rotary cutter, draw two 3 ½” squares on the wrong side of the fabric with a ruler and pencil, then cut them out with a scissor.
STEP 3: Press the Edges
On each of the fabric squares, press one edge toward the wrong side by about 1/4 inch.
This will create a clean edge for sewing the opening closed later.
STEP 4: Sew the Sides
Place the two squares with the wrong sides together, aligning all edges. Pin them if you wish.
Using the edge of the presser foot as a guide, sew the three unpressed sides.
Remember to backstitch at the start and end to secure the seams.
STEP 5: Fill With Catnip
Turn the sewn pillow right-side out.
Fill it about 2/3 – 3/4 full with dried catnip.
This catnip toy is designed to be flat. If you prefer a softer, more pillowy toy, consider adding some polyfill to the inside of it along with the catnip. This will give it a pillow-like feel.
STEP 6: Close Opening
Use a few pins to hold the opening closed
and then edgestitch the opening of the catnip toy closed.
Edgestitching involves sewing 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the edge of the project. If you need help, check out our edgestitch tutorial.
The catnip toy is complete. Hand it over to your cat and watch the fun begin.![Catnip Toy Cat Playing with Toy 4]()
