Patriotic Farmhouse Rag Wreath

Welcome guests to your home on the Fourth of July, Memorial Day or any day with a colorful homemade red, white and blue rag wreath on your door.  A rag wreath is very easy to make; you just cut fabric strips and tie them to a wire wreath form.

Once you get your supplies together, you can put one together fairly quickly. You can actually watch TV while making your wreath as I did. 

HOW TO MAKE A RAG WREATH

Handmade fabric wreaths are a way to change your decor up throughout the seasons and keep things looking fresh. I really love how easy it is to customize this farmhouse rag wreath pattern for other holidays just by varying the fabric.   

It can be made for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Christmas, Sporting event, etc.  Need a gift idea?  Create one as a hostess gift, or for family, friends, teachers or co-workers.

Another plus, a rag wreath is inexpensive to make.  I have seen them at craft fairs and on sale on websites for $25 - $60 dollars.  I'm confident you can create this fabulous look yourself.

to make the patriotic rag wreath, you will need:

• Wire wreath frame
• Blue Fabric - 1/2 yard
• Red Fabric - 1/2 yard
• White Fabric - 3//4 yard
• Rotary Cutter, Quilters Ruler and Mat

OR

• Scissor and Ruler

NOTE: The amount of fabric needed to make the wreath will vary depending on the size wreath purchased.  For this tutorial, I used a 14” wire wreath frame purchased at Dollar Tree.

STEP 1: Gather supplies

Gather up all the fabric and tools you need before you start the project.

It is not necessary to wash the fabric.

STEP 2: cutting strips

The easiest way to cut the fabric is with a rotary cutter, quilter ruler and mat. However, you can just use a scissor and ruler.

All strips should be cut 1 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches long.

Let's start cutting! 

When purchasing fabric, it is normally folded in half. Then cut as follows:

• With the fabric folded in half, first, you need to find one straight edge.  So, if there is no straight edge use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut one.
• Next, lay the straight edge of the fabric on the mats 0 line mark, lay the ruler on top of the fabric, lining up the edge of the ruler on the 8 1/2" mat mark.   Butting the rotary cutter blade right along the side of the ruler, cut an 8 1/2" strip.
• Then cut a second 8 1/2 inch wide strip.  
• Put two 8 1/2 inch strips on top of each other and sub-cut 1 1/2 inch wide.
• Continue cutting in this manner until you have all the fabric cut into 1 1/2 inch x 8 1/2 inch strips.

If you don't have a rotary cutter, simply use a scissor and ruler to cut the strips.

Once you have the strips cut, stack them according to color on your work surface.

STEP 3: attach blue strips to the wreath frame

Now it's time to start tying the fabric onto the wreath frame a section at a time.  

Let's begin with the blue strips.  To start, turn the wreath frame so the curved side is facing up. 

To add the blue strips to the wreath, follow the pattern below:

Take one blue strip and loop it around the two outside wires.  Make sure the ends are even on the top side and tie it into a single knot. 

Then, take another blue strip of fabric, loop it around the two inside wires, even the ends and tie a single knot.

Next, tie a blue strip around the two middle wires.

Slide the fabric strips close together.

Repeat this process over and over again until all the blue strips are used ending with the middle wires.

You can see in the photo below how the back of the wreath looks when you follow the pattern.

STEP 4: adding white and red strips

The balance of the wreath will be finished by attaching white and red strips in the same fashion following this pattern:

Begin by attaching a white strip to the outside two wires, the inside two wires and the middle two wires.

Repeat with three more white strips.  A total of 6 white strips.

Next, tie three red strips to the wreath - one to the two outside wires, one to the two inside wires and one to the two middle wires.

Repeat with 6 white strips.

Repeat with 3 red strips.

Continue until the entire wreath is covered.

 Lastly, fluff the strips up all around the wreath. 

And that’s it! I told you it was super easy to create a rag wreath! 

Below is what your wreath should look like from the back.  Note the pattern of side-side-middle-side-side-middle.

Another thing I like about this patriotic farmhouse rag wreath is it is easy to store when not in use.  When ready to use it again, just fluff the fabrics and ta-da it is ready to hang on the door or in your home.
