how to make fabric patriotic flag garland
WHAT YOU NEED for the American flag garland:
- 1/2 yard - Blue Star Fabric (link to fabric below)
- 1 yard - White and Red Striped Fabric (link to fabric below)
- Cord or Twine
- Cutting mat, rotary cutter and quilter's ruler - this is optional, you can just use a scissor to cut the fabric
- Scissor
Finished Size: 50" wide including the loops
This is the finished measurement of the completed garland. The measurement can vary depending on how close or far apart the fabric strips are placed.
The length can also be increased by purchasing more fabric to add more strips.
INSTRUCTIONS for making the patriotic garland :
STEP 1: gather supplies
Gather your supplies.
I visited my local Joann's and found the perfect fabric that would reflect the American flag - a 1/2 yard of blue fabric with stars and 1 yard of the red & white striped fabric.
The cord used was a macrame cord found at Dollar Tree. Use whatever cord you have on hand or purchase cord or twine.
A rotary cutter, cutting mat and quilter's ruler will make cutting quick. However, if you don't have these sewing tools you can still do this project by cutting the fabric with a scissor.
A fabric scissor is also necessary to complete this project.
STEP 2: cut fabric strips for the flag garland
After gathering all the supplies, the next step is to cut the fabric. You can use scissors, pinking shears or a rotary cutter. Using a rotary cutter is a time saver.
If the fabric is not already folded in half, do so by folding the fabric with selvage edges together.
Cut the fabric into 2" wide strips.
Cut off the selvage. The selvage is the finished edge of the fabric with writing on it.
With the scissor, cut the strips in half on the fold line. Cut all the fabric.
The finished strips should be approximately 22" long x 2" wide.
If you're using 1/2 yard of blue fabric you should have 18 strips. 1 yard of the other fabric should produce 36 strips.
STEP 3: Attach strips to length of cord
Prepare the cord by forming a loop at the end and tying it into a knot. You want to create a 1 - 2 inch loop after the knot which will be used to hang the patriotic flag garland.
Start with the blue fabric strips.
To attach each strip of fabric to the cord:
- Fold the strip in half with the cut ends on top of each other; both with right sides up.
- After lining up the ends, the top will form a loop.
- Place the loop end on top of the cord
- Holding the stacked strip ends, slide the two ends under the cord.
- Poke your thumb and pointer finger through the loop.
- Once your fingers are through the loop, grab the stacked tails.
- Pull them through the loop.
- Pull until tight creating a knot around the cord.
Once the first fabric strip is secure on the cord, move on to the next strip and tie it to the cord. Repeat with all the blue strips. As you add fabric, slide the knots along the cord next to each other.
Once all the blue strips are added, repeat the process, adding the red/white striped fabric.
When finished, make a loop at the end of the cord and tie it into a knot.
DONE! Hang your garland wherever you'd like. Really easy and so cute!
The best part of this garland is it requires no special tools or talent. Anyone can make it!
I hope you enjoyed this DIY fabric American Flag rag garland tutorial.
