Magic wand facts
The wizard wand has a core that contains something from a magical creature, like unicorn hair, dragon heartstrings, or phoenix feathers.
The core determines the wand's properties and the type of magic it can wield.
The outer part of the wizard wand can be made of different types of wood, such as holly, willow, and elm.
A wizard's wand is usually between 9 and 14 inches long, depending on the height of the witch or wizard who uses it. The 18-inch doll DIY wands will be 4 inches long.
In terms of flexibility, a wizard's wand can range from very brittle to quite flexible.

WHAT YOU NEED to make a doll wand:
INSTRUCTIONS to make a magic wand
STEP 1: Form one end of the wizard's wand into a point
The 4" dowel doesn't look much like a magic wand yet. It needs to be tapered down and shaped using the sandpaper. The easiest way is to lay the sandpaper on the work surface and move the wooden dowels across it.
Rub the dowel on the sandpaper until the wand end is tapered as desired. There is no need to sand the other end of the dowel, which will be the handle and covered with glue or beads.
Step 2: design the magic wand's handle
The handle of the wand can be made in many ways. Pony beads, seed beads, or other embellishments can be glued to the top to form the handle.
If beads are not the desired look, hot glue can be swirled around the end to make a handle. Be very careful as the glue from the glue gun is hot and will take a long time to dry when it is a thick handle.
Step 3: make the design on the magic wand
The hot glue gun will be used again to form swirls and designs down the length of the wand. Start at the handle once it is cool, and make drips and swirls going down and around the length of the wand.
Once again, seed beads or other embellishments can be added to make the wand interesting. Let the hot glue cool and dry.
Step 4: paint the wizard's wand
Once the wand is completely cooled and dry, use some acrylic craft paint to paint the magic wand. Shades of brown and black are the most common, but the wand can be any color desired.
The wand color can be customized with highlights. Take another shade of paint, dip the paintbrush in it, and then brush it on a paper plate or scrap paper to get most of the paint off.
Only a small amount of the highlight color needs to be used to touch here and there on the wand. Add highlights until the wand is the desired color. If there are too many highlights, the original color can be painted over some of the highlights.
Let the paint dry completely, and then the magic wand for your 18" doll is complete. Take a peek at our second doll wand video!
