INSTRUCTIONS for sewing a doll scarf

STEP 1: Mark the fabric

Take the two 19" x 2 1/2" rectangular pieces of fabric and place the right sides of the fabric together, matching all the raw edges. Be sure the edges are lined up.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.2

Using a ruler and marking tool, make lines 2" from both of the short ends of the scarf. 18in Doll Scarf_1.1.3Pin the long edges together between the marks.

step 2: sew the long sides together

Take the project to the sewing machine and sew between the two marks using a 1/4" seam allowance.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.4

Start sewing at one marked line and stop stitching at the marked line at the other end of the fabric.

Be sure to backtack at the beginning and end of the stitching.

Stitch the same way on the other long side of the scarf.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.5

step 3: turn the scarf right side out

Clip all of the loose threads on the project. Now, turn the scarf so the right side of the fabric is facing out.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.6Once this is done, take the scarf to the ironing board and iron it flat. Press on both sides of the project as well.

step 4: topstitch the scarf

Top stitching is sewing close to the edge of the sewn project.  As you did in step 1, measure 2" from both ends of the strip and mark a line. 18in Doll Scarf_1.1.7

Start at the mark and sew very close to the edge of the long sides of the scarf. Do this on both sides of the scarf, ending at the 2" mark.

Be sure to backtack at the beginning and end of the stitching. When finished, clip any loose threads.

step 5: sew along the marked lines

Next, place the scarf horizontally at the sewing machine. Carefully stitch along the marked ends 2" from the end of the scarf.

Do this on both ends, being sure to backtack at the beginning and end and clipping loose threads.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.8

step 6: make fringe on the ends of the scarf

Take the fabric scissors, cut strips along the ends of the scarf, and be careful not to cut into the stitching line.

The fringe can be as narrow or as thick as preferred. Cut the fringe on both ends of the scarf.18in Doll Scarf_1.1.9
