DIY Breast Cancer Awareness Pin (Spool Knitted)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it is the perfect time to make a spool-knitted breast cancer pin.

These breast cancer awareness pins or keychains are a great way to use spool knitting cords to make this symbol of hope.

Are you unsure how to spool knit, also known as French knitting? In step 1, we include a link to a complete tutorial on spool knitting using a French knitter or spool knitter.

The unique design, shaped like a breast cancer ribbon and made with a spool knit cord, is a powerful symbol of support, hope, and unity.

Not only is spool knitting easy, but creating and wearing a breast cancer pink spool-knit ribbon is a great way to increase awareness of the disease.Breast Cancer Awareness Pin fb

WHAT YOU NEED to make a breast cancer awareness pin or keychain

INSTRUCTIONS to make custom lapel pins from a spool-knitted cord

STEP 1: Knit spool knit cord

With a spool knitter or French knitter and pink yarn, knit a 7 - 8 inch length of spool knitted cord.  Click the link for a tutorial on how to spool knit.

STEP 2: hide the tails of the spool knit cord

After knitting the 7 - 8 inch length of spool knitted cord, the completed spool knitted cord will have a tail on each end. It is simple to hide the tails inside the cord.

Take the yarn tail and thread it into the eye of a tapestry needle. Click the link for a quick way to thread a needle with the yarn.

Using the needle, push it into the end and come back out a few inches from the end. Spool Knitted Breast Cancer Awareness Pin_1.2.1Cut the yarn where it comes out from the cord, and the tail will be hidden inside the cord. Repeat with the other yarn tail.

Step 3: make the ribbon

Fold the pink cord in half to form a horseshoe shape. Lay the middle of the right side over the middle of the left side of the cord to form a loop at the top.

To secure the cord where it intersects in the middle, use the sewing needle threaded with pink thread to hold the cord together by making a  few stitches along the edge on either side.Spool Knitted Breast Cancer Awareness Pin_1.3.1

Do the same thing on the back of the ribbon. Spool Knitted Breast Cancer Awareness Pin_1.3.2When secure, knot and snip the thread.

step 4: sew or glue a pin onto the cord ribbon

Making this into a pin can be done in one of two ways.

A pin back can be hot glued to the back side of the ribbon, or a safety pin can be sewn onto the back. If a child is making this pin, supervise using the pin and the hot glue in this step.Spool Knitted Breast Cancer Awareness Pin_1.3.3

This breast cancer awareness ribbon can also be made into a key chain by threading a ribbon onto a key ring and attaching it by sewing it to the top of the pink spool knit ribbon.

Either way, this makes a beautiful ribbon to show your support and bring awareness to breast cancer research and cancer prevention.Spool Knitted Breast Cancer Awareness Pin_1.3.4
