There is a wide variety of hair accessories to suit different styles, occasions, and hair types. Here are some popular categories of hair accessories: hair clips, hair ties, hair wraps, combs and hair picks, hair claws, and headbands.
This tutorial shows how to cover a plain plastic headband with a tube of spool knitting. The spool knit cord is made using a French knitter.
Kids love to spool knit but often lack ideas for what to do with the knitted tubes they create with the spool knitter or Knitting Nancy.
This is a great project for using the spool knitter. A length of spool knitting cord is made, and then a plain plastic headband is slipped into the tube to cover it.
Embellishments can be added if desired.

INSTRUCTIONS to make this spool knit headband
STEP 1: make and measure the spool knit cord
We will be covering an inexpensive plastic headband with the spool-knitted cord. I'm using a thin headband that will fit into the cording.
Make a spool knit cord 1 1/2" to 2" longer than the headband. Leave the knitted cord on the spool knitter for the next step. Cut off the yarn, leaving a long tail. It will be used to finish off the project. To learn how to spool knit, click the link.
Step 2: Pin the Loops
Before removing the cord from the spool knitter, place a pin in each of the loops on the pegs. This will hold the loops until the cording is slid onto the headband.
At each peg, slide the pin into the yarn loop and close it before removing the loop from the peg. Four pins hold the loops of the spool knitted cord. The cord is tied off after the headband is completely covered.
Once pinned, remove the knitted cord from the spool knitter.
step 3: insert the plastic headband into the knitted tube
Since the cord is a tube, the inexpensive plastic headband can be slid inside.
Carefully begin to push one end of the headband into the tube. Slowly move the tube up and around the headband. Take care and don't break the plastic headband.
Keep working the cord over the headband until the knitted cord completely covers it.
Step 4: tie off the end of the cord
Once the plastic headband is completely covered, it is time to close up the end of the cord.
Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.
Now, insert the needle through one of the loops and remove the pin. Insert the needle into the next loop in a clockwise direction; continue to do this through all of the loops of yarn. Remove each pin as you go.
Pull gently on the end of the yarn, and the tube will close up. Make a small knot at the end.
Finally, push the needle into the cord next to the knot and come out an inch up the cord. Pull the yarn and the knot up against the headband to bury the knot.
Clip the loose yarn with scissors at the edge of the cord.
Once again, to hide the loose yarn tail at the other end of the cording, thread the yarn onto the tapestry needle. Push the needle into the cord and come up a few inches from the end.Using scissors, as before, clip the end of your yarn.
Step 5: (Optional) embellish the headband
Once the headband is complete, the crafter may want to add some embellishment.
A fun thing to add is a spool knit flower.
Other embellishments could be ribbons or bows. Get creative! There are many different things to use as embellishments!
