I like to make pom-poms with my Clover Pom-pom maker while I'm watching TV. These makers allow you to make consistent-sized fluffy pom-poms, a great way to use scrap yarn left over from other projects.

INSTRUCTIONS to make your own pom pom Wreath
STEP 1: Make Pom-poms
Go through your yarn stash and find some green, yellow, and brown yarn. I used three different green colors to give my tree more depth. The yellow pom-poms will form a star for the top of the tree, and the brown yarn pom-poms will make the tree trunk.
Make pom-poms using the yarn and Clover pom-pom makers for perfect pompoms that don't need a lot of trimming. You can also use the cardboard method to make pom-poms. Annette likes using a flat cardboard with a slot instead of a cardboard circle. Click the links above for tutorials on the two methods for making pom-poms.
I find it easy to make these pom-poms while watching television.
For the tree wreath, you will need approximately 15 assorted green pom-poms made using the two larger pom-pom makers. I made a few from each color of green yarn. I made:
- Ten large pom-poms (approx 3 3/8")
- Five large pom-poms (approx 2 1/2")
Make six (approx 1 3/8") pom-poms from the yellow yarn for the star.
Make four (approx 1 5/8") brown pom-poms for the tree trunk.
STEP 2: Prepare wire wreath form
When searching for wreath forms, none are specifically for trees. I found this one, which is a hat. The vendors seem to change the name for the season, so at Halloween, it's a Witches Hat, but at Christmas, it's a Santa Hat or an Elf Hat.
The wreath form I used is smaller, at approximately 12.5" x 13.5". The size of your wreath form will determine how many pom-poms you will need.
Since I wanted to make a Christmas tree, I bent up the brim part of the wreath form. Squeeze the bottom section of the wreath form together and then bend the arms up towards the top of the frame. This will allow more pom-poms to be placed across the bottom of the tree.
The wires on the wreath form are pretty far apart. This makes it harder to attach the pom-poms and avoid gaps in the wreath. To give more attachment points, add a wire between each of the existing wires.
Cut a piece of floral wire a little longer than the width of the wreath form. Use needlenose pliers to bend the end of the wire around the wire frame. The pliers can be used to crimp and trim off any extra wire.
Place an extra wire between each of the wires on the wreath form.
STEP 3: Make a star from Yellow Pom-poms
Attach the six yellow pom-poms using the yarn tails to make a star. Use a piece of yellow yarn if you don't have yarn tails on your pom-poms.
Thread the yarn tail from one pom-pom onto a yarn needle. We have a quick tip on threading a yarn needle using paper. Click the link to see our quick tip or watch the video for this project to learn to thread a yarn needle quickly.
Insert the needle through the center of one of the pom-poms and push it next to the first pom-pom. Continue threading the other four pom-poms onto the needle and then through the first pom-pom. You will want the first pom-pom to be in the center and the other five surrounding it. Tie off the yarn.
Cut off the extra ends of the yarn.
The star should look like the photo below, with one pom-pom in the center surrounded by five other pom-poms.
Prepare the star to be attached to the wreath by placing a piece of yellow pipe cleaner through the star with two ends on one side.
The star is ready to be put on the wreath.
STEP 4: Make a Tree TRUNK from brown Pom-poms
Create the tree trunk from the four brown pom-poms using the same technique except form them into a square with two on top and two on bottom.
Add a piece of pipe cleaner through the center of the tree trunk.
STEP 5: Add Pipe Cleaners to Green Pom-poms
I placed the pom-poms over the wreath form to get an idea of how I may attach them.
Then, place a piece of green pipe cleaner through the center of each pom-pom. Ensure you put it through the center otherwise it will fall out.
STEP 6: Attach pom poms to wreath form
It's time to start attaching the pom-poms to the wreath form. Begin by attaching the star to the top of the wreath form.
Place the star with one pipe cleaner end through the center of the wreath form and the other on the outside. Twist the two pipe cleaner ends around one another several times, then twist the ends around the wreath form in two places for extra security.
Take the tree trunk pom-poms and place them in the center bottom of the wreath form. Place the two pipe cleaners around the wire in the center of the wreath form and wrap them around one another to secure the trunk to the wreath form. Wrap the ends of the pipe cleaner around the horizontal wire to help hold the trunk in place.
Next, place the larger pom-poms at the bottom of the tree. Attach the pom-poms using the whole width of the wreath form, including the bent-up sections.
As you attach each pom pom, wrap the pipe cleaner ends around a wire and twist them together. Then, wrap the ends around other wires to help keep the pom-pom in place, so it won't flop around.
Mix up the different-colored green pom-poms and place them randomly on the tree. Use all of the wires to add the pom-poms.
As you build the tree by adding more pom poms, transition to the smaller green pom poms. Using the smaller ones at the top will help the tree taper to a point.
Look at your tree, see if any empty spots need to be filled in, and add more pom-poms as needed.
I used ten large pom-poms and five smaller pom-poms to fill up my wreath form.
Below is a view of the wreath's back. The pipe cleaners are twisted around the wreath form.
STEP 7: Add a Hanging loop
An extra piece of yarn can be tied onto the wreath form to hang the wreath.Use and over the door wreath hanger to hang your wreath on the door.
STEP 8: Add Decorations (optional)
The tree wreath is cute already, but you can add some decorations to make it look more like a Christmas tree.
Samples with decorations
Here are some different ideas for decorating the tree wreath.
This first one is my favorite, with red bows, silver beads, and bells.
Below is the tree with just the beads and bells.
Another version with just the bows.
This one has bows and sprigs of silver berries.
Silver berries and golden twirls.
