INSTRUCTIONS for making the hanging easter garland
STEP 1: Prepare the template
To begin, download and print the egg template, then cut it out. Trace the template onto a piece of cardboard, such as cardstock or a cereal box, and cut it out to create a sturdy pattern for tracing your fabric pieces. ![Easter banner Template]()
STEP 2: Cut the fabric
Grab your favorite spring fabric and place two fabric pieces together with right sides facing each other. Position the cardboard template on top
and trace around it with a pencil.
Pin the fabric layers together to prevent shifting, then cut out the fabric egg, leaving a 1/4” to 3/8” seam allowance outside the tracing line. ![Easter Egg Garland 5 Cut out egg]()
Step 3: Attach the ribbon
Cut two 8” lengths of your chosen ribbon.![Easter Egg Garland 6 Ribbons]()
Separate the two fabric egg pieces.
On one fabric egg (the right side), pin a ribbon at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, aligning the cut edge of the ribbon with the fabric edge.
To prevent the loose ribbon ends from getting caught while sewing, pin them to the center of the egg.
Next, lay the second fabric egg piece, right side down, on top, sandwiching the ribbons inside. Pin in a few places to hold the layers together.
Step 4: Sew the Egg
Starting on the left side of the egg, just below the ribbon, stitch along the traced line.
Continue sewing all the way around, stopping about 2” before reaching the starting point to leave an opening for turning.
Don't forget to backstitch at both the start and end to secure the stitches.
Step 5: Turn and Press
Remove the fabric egg from the sewing machine and snip the threads and clip curves for a smoother edge when turned.
Turn the egg right side out through the opening. Gently use your fingers or a tool like a “point turner” or chopstick to push out the seam to create a crisp, neat edge. Press the egg flat with an iron, folding the seam allowance of the opening inward so it lines up with the rest of the stitching.
Step 6: Edgestitch for a finishing touch
Return to the sewing machine and edgestitch around the entire egg. Edgestitch is sewing 1/16” – 1/8” from the edge.
This final touch will close the opening and give the egg a polished, finished look.
Repeat these steps to create multiple eggs,
then tie the ribbons together in a lovely bow for a beautiful Easter Egg Garland.
CRAFT TIP: To prevent ribbon ends from fraying, dab a little fray check or nail polish along the cut edge.
