INSTRUCTIONS for making the hanging easter garland

STEP 1: Prepare the template

To begin, download and print the egg template, then cut it out. Trace the template onto a piece of cardboard, such as cardstock or a cereal box, and cut it out to create a sturdy pattern for tracing your fabric pieces. Easter banner Template

STEP 2: Cut the fabric

Grab your favorite spring fabric and place two fabric pieces together with right sides facing each other.  Position the cardboard template on topEaster Egg Garland 3 Template On Fabricand trace around it with a pencil. Easter Egg Garland 4 Traced TemplatePin the fabric layers together to prevent shifting, then cut out the fabric egg, leaving a 1/4” to 3/8” seam allowance outside the tracing line. Separate the two fabric egg pieces.  Easter Egg Garland 7 Ribbons Placed on FabricOn one fabric egg (the right side), pin a ribbon at the 10 o’clock and  2 o’clock positions, aligning the cut edge of the ribbon with the fabric edge.

Step 4: Sew the Egg

Starting on the left side of the egg, just below the ribbon, stitch along the traced line.Easter Egg Garland 10 Stitch aroundContinue sewing all the way around, stopping about 2” before reaching the starting point to leave an opening for turning.Easter Egg Garland 11 Stitched Egg  Don't forget to backstitch at both the start and end to secure the stitches.

Step 5: Turn and Press

Remove the fabric egg from the sewing machine and snip the threads and clip curves for a smoother edge when turned.

Easter Egg Garland 12 Turned eggTurn the egg right side out through the opening.  Gently use your fingers or a tool like a “point turner” or chopstick to push out the seam to create a crisp, neat edge.  Press the egg flat with an iron, folding the seam allowance of the opening inward so it lines up with the rest of the stitching.

Step 6: Edgestitch for a finishing touch

Return to the sewing machine and edgestitch around the entire egg.  Edgestitch is sewing 1/16” – 1/8” from the edge.Easter Egg Garland 13 Topstitched Egg This final touch will close the opening and give the egg a polished, finished look.
