Free Scrappy Quilt Patterns

It doesn’t take long to start building a stash of scraps when you are a quilter!  All of those little snips and slices as the pieces are cut out, all of the extra fabric purchased just in case…soon the scrap pile grows and grows and grows.

I love to look at my scrap pile and take a trip down memory lane.  To see all of the scraps from those beloved projects makes me smile.  And as more special projects are made, the scrap pile continues to grow.

Let’s get real though.  Those scraps are never going to be thrown away.  Quilters just can’t bring themselves to toss fabric that they know could be used somehow, someday.

There are many wonderful and free scrappy quilt patterns on this page to do what we said we’d do when we bought that giant tub!  Let’s start to use up those scraps!

One way to use up scrap fabric is to make a crazy quilt.  They are super easy, look awesome, and don’t require much in the way of measurements.  Take a look at the crazy quilt page on this site.

For those who tend to gravitate to more traditional or minimal quilt patterns, the idea of scrap quilts may sound messy and unappealing.

But the scrap quilt patterns gathered on this page will help to keep a focused design without a cluttered appearance.

Some of these beautiful free scrappy quilt patterns use the trick of maintaining a color palette.  They encourage the quilter to just pick a few colors to stick with. These designs look much more intentional and well thought out.

Take a look at how the scrap quilt patterns below use negative space to control what could be chaos.

The Scrap and Bear Paw Block Quilt pattern from Red Pepper Quilts uses light colored fabrics in the negative space between the bear claws to keep the pattern looking clean.

And don’t forget that using those fabric scraps to make a scrappy quilt keeps sewing green.  Reuse and recycle to make something beautiful!  You’ll even find patterns here for quilts made from clothing scraps!

There is a great page devoted to using clothing scraps to make memory quilts.  These quilts are made from old jerseys, or baby clothes, or other clothing that holds a special meaning.

You must admit, that is definitely environmentally sound!  For some other great ideas for using up scrap fabric, take a look at the upcycling fabric page!

And now it’s time to scroll down and see the wonderful free scrappy quilt patterns.  Let’s bust those scraps!
