I just love Valentine’s Day! Even though my children are grown, I still decorate for Valentine’s Day. My sewing machine is my friend when I’m making new Valentine's sewing projects to decorate with or give as gifts.
One year when my kids were young, I sewed up twenty-five treat bags for one of them to pass out at the school’s Valentine’s Day party. With pretty ric rack and buttons, pink, red and white fabrics, and drawstrings, they were a real hit with the third graders.
I'm sure it helped that they were filled with candy treats! There are several links below to similar treat bags that will make this Valentine’s Day super special. Make them for your kids, for friends, or get ambitious like I did and make them for a whole Valentine’s Day classroom party!
Along with cute treat bags, there are a slew of Valentine's sewing projects to brighten this holiday.
Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
There are several legends about how Valentine’s Day came about. Valentine was a very popular name back in the third century AD. Most believe there were one or two Valentines who preached the word of the Bible and were executed on February 14th, although in different years.
The Catholic Church may have made Valentine a Saint, which is why St.Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th.
A second story, which takes into account the loving portion of Valentine’s Day is that Valentine was a Roman priest who defied Emperor Claudius II. The Emperor had banned marriage so men would be more willing to go to war, and Valentine continued to marry people in secret which resulted in his execution.
Whatever the dark beginnings of St. Valentine’s Day, it is a day of celebrating love.
So to show the love let’s get to decorating the home and making St. Valentine's Day gifts with some classy sewing! Look no further than this page to get started.
