how to make a crazy patchwork heart pillow

Most of the traditional crazy quilt projects were sewn on a foundation piece.  This project isn't.  It's a small crazy patchwork project that doesn't need a foundation. Crazy Patchwork Heart Quilt Pattern - Finished Single Heart

WHAT YOU NEED to make crazy heart pillow:

INSTRUCTIONS for sewing crazy heart quilt pillow :

STEP 1: the fabric for the crazy patchwork heart

Crazy fabric patchwork hearts are a pretty fabric scrap busting project. This quilt pattern can be made with bits and pieces of fabric.  Rummage in your scrap fabric bin for red, pink, mauve, rose or any festive Valentine's fabric left over from other projects.

STEP 2: template for crazy patchwork heart

A heart template is needed to make the handmade cute crazy quilted hearts. Make the heart template yourself or look online for one to download and print.

Crazy Patchwork Heart TemplateA simple method for making your own is to fold a piece of paper in half, draw half a heart on the paper and cut it out.

The one I made measures approximately 6" wide by 5" tall.  Of course, the crazy patchwork heart can be made in any size you like.

STEP 3: Set Up the sewing area for Crazy Quilt Heart

This project (as with all crazy quilt projects) involves a lot of sewing, trimming and pressing.  To make assembly easy, keep the rotary cutter, quilters ruler, cutting mat, iron and ironing board close to the sewing machine.

Here is my setup:

Crazy Patchwork Heart Set Up Work AreaNext to my sewing machine is a small cutting mat along with a rotary cutter and quilter ruler.

Crazy Patchwork Heart IronDirectly behind where I sit to sew is a small ironing board, iron and the scrap fabric for the project.

STEP 4: cut the first piece of fabric

The first fabric piece should be a somewhat smallish piece with five sides and irregular angles.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Trim First Piece

Choose a fabric for the center.  Cut a piece from the fabric that is about 2" square.  Trim the piece so it has five sides with different angles.

STEP 5: sewing a second fabric piece to the first

From the scrap pile, select the second fabric you want to add to the first piece.

It should have one straight edge that is at least as long as one of the edges of the center piece. If it doesn't have a straight edge, simply cut a straight edge. If the second piece is longer than the first piece, that's okay!

Crazy Patchwork Heart First Two FabricsLay the second fabric on top of the center piece with right sides together and the straight raw edges aligned.  For easier sewing of the pieces together and to see where to sew, turn the pieces so the center piece is showing on top. Crazy Patchwork Heart Sew Fabrics Together

Sew the second piece in place along the straight edge with a 1/4" seam allowance.  Sew only from one edge of the center piece to the other end of the center piece.  No need to backtack (backstitch).

Remove from the sewing machine and trim the threads.

STEP 6: press the seam

With the iron press the seam to set it, roll the fabric back and press it.  Press so the seam is pressed away from the center piece. Crazy Patchwork Heart Iron Seam Open

STEP 7: trim the second piece

Before the next piece can be added, the second piece needs to be trimmed. Trim the second piece using the edges of the center piece as a guide.  With a ruler, follow the line angles of the center piece. Crazy Patchwork Heart Trim Edge

Place the ruler along the edges of the center piece and trim the second piece. Crazy Patchwork Heart Edge Trimmed

STEP 8: sewing third piece around the center

Select the next fabric to add making sure it has a straight edge. Pieces will be added in a clockwise direction.

The third piece is laid in place across the second piece that was added and the second side of the center piece.  The piece needs to be long enough to extend across the second piece that was added and the center (first) piece.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Next Piece Sewn

The third piece is then stitched in place.  Again I like to stitch with the wrong side up so I can see exactly where to start and stop the sewing.

Remove from the sewing machine, trim threads, press to set the seam, roll it back, press and trim edges.

Some tips when sewing crazy patchwork

  • As you add fabrics always add in a clockwise direction (the next side to the right)
  • When sewing turn the piece to the wrong side to see exactly where to stitch
  • If adding a small piece, before sewing fold it back along the stitching line to make sure there is enough fabric for trimming straight edges
  • Always clip thread as you go
  • Press the piece as you go
  • Press seam toward the last piece added
  • If you add a large wide piece, it may need to trim it narrower (see the photos that follow)

Crazy Patchwork Heart Trimming Fabric

  • Don't throw out all the scraps you cut off the piece when trimming the straight edges. Use them to make another project such as another scrappy heart, scrappy quilt or crumb quilt.

STEP 9: continue piecing

Repeat the steps until the scrappy fabric is large enough for the heart template.

STEP 10: cutting out the heart

Once the scrappy crazy fabric is large enough, place the heart template on the fabric.  Either pin it to the fabric or use a chalk marker to trace around the heart.

STEP 11: stitch around the heart and clip

To make the crazy patchwork quilt pillow, a piece of backing fabric is required.  Choose a backing fabric from the scrap bin or use another crazy patchwork heart as the backing.

Place the heart template on the pillow back fabric and cut it out.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Front and Back Ready

Take the crazy patchwork heart piece and the backing fabric; pin the two hearts with pretty sides together.

Slowing sew all the way around the edge of the heart with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a small 2 - 3" gap opening at one of the heart-sloping sides for turning.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Front and Back Sewn Together

After sewing clip from the outer edge towards the seam along the curves.

Some sewing tips for sewing the heart pillow

  • Begin sewing along one of the curved heart sides
  • When sewing around curves, use a smaller stitch size. You may have to raise the pressure foot and pivot the material when sewing.
  • Backstitch at the beginning and end of the opening gap.
  • When you reach the pointy parts (the inner and outer points) of the heart, instead of pivoting with your stitches, take a few stitches across the point - this will help it to lay flatter once you've turned it right side out.
  • When clipping the curves,  take care not to clip into the stitches.

STEP 12: turn, Stuff and sew opening closed

Turn the heart pillow pretty side out.  You can insert a pencil into the heart to push out the seams to help form a nice heart shape.

Lightly fill the heart shape with polyester stuffing.  I didn't stuff my heart too full.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Turned with StuffingAfter stuffing fold the raw edges of the opening inward 1/4" so they're aligned flush with the seam and pin to keep them in place.

Take a hand sewing needle and matching thread to sew the opening closed using the ladder (invisible) stitch.

STEP 13: embellishments - optional

After sewing the opening closed, it can be displayed plain, as is, or embellished with beads, ribbon, buttons, rick rack, cording, etc.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Stuffed Emblellishment Ideas

Fusible fabric glue is needed to attach decorations to the heart.

Place a small dot of glue on the heart and put the embellishment on top of the glue.  Allow the glue to dry.

Crazy Patchwork Heart Finished Hearts

The fabric heart decorations are ready to go!  These heart pillows look really cool together in a group of two or three!
