Quilting and sewing projects with precuts is a wonderful way to begin quilting. On this page, the focus precut is the jelly roll. Moda fabrics use the name jelly roll. Other manufacturers call these sets of 2-1/2" strips rolie polie, strips, or roll up.
There are many free jelly roll quilt patterns and jelly roll projects to get any beginner started and to provide quick and easy projects to give the experienced quilter a jump start with these precut fabrics.
How many strips are in a jelly roll?
A jelly roll is a bundle of precut fabric strips measuring 2 ½” wide by 44”- 45” long. These jelly roll bundles usually contain 40 - 42 strips of fabric. The fabrics are bundled in a variety of coordinating prints, colors, and themes.
Most of the jelly roll fabric strips are made of high-quality quilter’s cotton cut from standard sized bolts of fabric, which is why they measure 44”-45” long. Jelly rolls can be purchased at a lower price, but the fabric is not as nice.
The strips of the jelly roll are usually rolled up in a cinnamon roll shape, hence the name.
