Mug rugs, oh sweet mug rugs! These little treasures are my favorite things to quilt. With minimal time and materials, a cute and usable quilted item is produced, perfect for yourself or a friend.
What is a mug rug?
A mug rug is much like a large coaster, except that it has room for a mug and a small snack. I love the extra room on my mug rug, sometimes forgoing a snack to using it to hold two drinks, such as coffee and my morning water.
What is the best batting for mug rugs?
The mug rugs usually have a pieced top like a quilt, although they can be crocheted or knitted as well. When making a quilted mug rug, it is often a great time to use leftover batting from full-sized quilt projects.
However, fusible, Insul Bright, and 100% cotton all make for good batting in a mug rug. The Insul Bright Insulates the mug rug to better protect furniture from extreme heat or cold, but this is not at all necessary for a good mug rug.
Generally, quilting cottons are used most often but cotton canvas also works well.
How many layers are in a mug rug?
Quilted mug rugs have three layers which provide more heat protection for furniture surfaces. The quilter may have a preference for the batting or middle layer of the mug rug, and by trying out different battings, they will find out which they prefer.
The three layers of the mug rug are the top, which is often a pieced layer, a batting layer, and a backing layer with the pretty side showing. The layers will need to be squared up and cut to the same size, which can be done with one of our favorite tools, the Quilter's Slide Lock.
By scrolling down, you will see several mug rugs directly made by Needlepointers Associates which will have both written and video instructions. There is also a nice collection of mug rugs from other sites on the internet that we think you might enjoy.
