INSTRUCTIONS to make a fall fabric garland

STEP 1: Cutting the Fabric for the garland

You will be cutting the fabric into 1” x 6” strips. An easy way to do this is to use a rotary cutter with a pinking blade. The pinking blade will help prevent the fabric from fraying and give it a decorative edge.

NOTE: If kids will be helping with this project, you may want to cut the strips 7" long instead of 6". It will be easier for them to tie the overhand knot.

Begin by cutting the fabric into 6” strips from selvage to selvage. Stack a few strips on top of each other and sub-cut into 1” strips.  The strips should look like the photo below and be 1" x 6" (or 7").Halloween No Sew Fabric Wreath - Fabric Strips

STEP 2: Fabric Strip Piles

On a work surface, place the fabric strips in piles sorting by each fabric.Halloween Fabric Garland - Fabric Strip Piles

STEP 3: Tie Loop for hanging the garland

Tie a loop at the end of the twine. This loop will be used to hang the garland.Halloween Fabric Garland - Tie Loop

STEP 4: Secure to Work Surface

With scotch tape or a binder clip, attach the twine to the work surface. This will make it easier to tie the fabric to the twine.Halloween Fabric Garland - Secure to Work Surface

STEP 5: Tie Fabric strips to Twine

Tie the fabric strips to the twine in a set pattern or randomly using an overhand knot. Continue adding strips until the garland is the desired length or all the strips have been used.

To make an overhand knot, cross the ends of the fabric strip over each other as shown below.Halloween Fabric Garland - Cross ends of fabric strip

STEP 6: Final Step for the fall fabric garland

Tie a loop at the other end of the twine.  The fabric garland is ready to hang from a window, mantle or wall.  It’s that simple and ready to place around your home.Halloween Fabric Garland - Garland Finished

This fabric garland can be made in any theme.  Make one in a Christmas theme and hang around your Christmas tree for a pretty and pet safe look.  Hang one for Valentine's or in Patriotic colors for July 4th.
