instructions for pumpkin block assembly
Step 1: Fabric Cutting Instructions for the Pumpkin Block
This is a wonderful fabric stash buster project since it only needs a small amount of fabric to make the block. So, before purchasing fabric, check out your leftover fabric from other projects.
Cut the fabric pieces according to the following cutting chart:
Pumpkin Fabric
1 - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
Background Fabric
5 - 1 1/2" squares
1 - 2 1/4" x 1 1/2" rectangle
1 - 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" rectangle
2 - 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips
2 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips
Pumpkin Stem Fabric
1 - 1" x 1 1/2" rectangle
Pumpkin Leaf Fabric
1 - 1 1/2" square
Sewing Instructions: Use a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise instructed.
Step 2: Pumpkin Body
For the body of the pumpkin, you will need the 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" square of pumpkin fabric and the four 1 1/2" squares of background fabric.
With a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the back of the four 1 1/2" squares of background fabric from corner to corner. This pencil line is a sewing line. Place one 1 1/2" square of the background fabric on each corner of the pumpkin fabric with the right sides together and all edges aligned. Please refer to the following photo for the correct placement of the stitching lines.
Sew along the drawn diagonal line of each square.
Once the four squares have been sewn to the pumpkin fabric, trim the excess fabric 1/4" from the stitched line. After trimming the block should look like this:
Unfold the corner pieces and gently press each corner away from the orange piece to the outside creating a pumpkin shape.
Step 3: How To Make The Leaf Section
Let's make the pumpkin leaf now.
Get the last 1 1/2" square of background fabric and the 1 1/2" square of leaf fabric. With a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the back of the lighter fabric from corner to corner.
Place the squares on top of each other, with the right sides together. Make sure to align all the edges. At the sewing machine, sew along the diagonal line. Trim away excess fabric 1/4" from the stitching line. Open and press the seam to one side.
Step 4: Sewing Leaf and Stem Strip Together
Time to sew the leaf and stem strip that will be attached to the top of the pumpkin body.
To make the top of the pumpkin, arrange the pieces ( from left to right) as follows (refer to the above photo):
2 1/4" x 1 1/2" background fabric, stem fabric, leaf piece, 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" background fabric.
After they are correctly arranged, sew the pieces together. With an iron, press the seams all in one direction. Then, sew this leaf and stem strip to the top of the pumpkinand press the seam toward the pumpkin shape.
Looking adorable. To finish the block it needs some borders.
Step 5: Add Pumpkin Block Border Strips
Grab the two 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" background fabric strips and sew them to the left and right sides of the pumpkin. With an iron, press the seams toward the background fabric.
Next get the last two strips, the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" background fabric strips and sew them to the top and bottom of the pumpkin. Again, use the iron to press the seams toward the background fabric.
The pumpkin block is finished.
